If you are a small group coordinator, leader, or are just looking for a great personal study, begin with the BASIC Series. It will lay a foundation of Biblical facts and beliefs that you can build upon. It is wonderful for new believers!

Packaging was great. It is a thin book but has a ton of content. Flow was great. Quality product.

Beetlejuice was the first mainstream commercial success of the collaboration, but Batman was the film which marked Tim Burton's arrival as a major figure in Hollywood film direction, and equally established Danny Elfman as a film score composer, particularly in relation to action and fantasy genres. The score for Batman won a Grammy in 1989 and is an outstanding example of his collaboration with Burton as well as admirably demonstrating his particular talents and distinctive compositional voice. In particular, it displays the characteristic "darkness" of his orchestration in this genre and the means he uses to create a full length film score from what is often a relatively small amount of musical material, in this case the famous Batman theme.

Elfman's original score supports well over half of Tim Burton's two-hour Batman, which is no small achievement. In addition, Elfman proved how effective music can be in what is usually called the "action movie" genre. Halfyard...examines Elfman's composition career, including his contributions to Weird Science, Edward Scissorhands and a number of offbeat comedies, showing how his work began to differ from the usual scores of the 1980s and 1990s. She analyzes the themes behind Batman and Elfman's effective use of duality in describing a complex character in conflict, set against others clearly good or evil. Excellent read for Elfman fans

I bought the score to Batman when it came out in 1989, and consequently decided that I wanted to do music for film. When I saw that this book was available, I immediately wanted to get it. It's extremely in depth, looking at every angle of the score, it's relationship with the film, the cultural significance of both the film and the score, the orchestration, the overall thematic elements, etc. I can only imagine how many times the author must have seen the film. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good book, good read, but sorely lacking in score examples

This book is a very interesting read. It is full of details about Danny Elfman's history and how he got to where he is today: one of the most ingenious, and recognizable composers of this era.

I had hopes of learning more about Elfman's compositional style and method. I had hopes of seeing some of the scores from the "Batman" film in order to study his methods better. That not what I got.

There is at best 30 measures of actual music in the book, and of those 30 or so measures they are partial scores that focus on individual individual groups instead of the score as whole.

I had hoped to see plenty of score to study. That is not what I got.

An excellent overview of the war.

Can the Vietnam War Ever Make Sense?
Where the Domino Fell, by James Olson and Randy Roberts, St. Martin's Press, 1991. Contemplating this book brings me a curious and unexpected reaction: I feel optimistic and reassured that such a clear history of the Vietnam Wars cannot but help educate future generations against repeating such an impossible adventure as was the US intervention in Vietnam.
Previous histories of the war had only left me disgusted and mystified as to how the American rulers could have continuously dug themselves deeper into the quicksand of resisting Vietnamese independence and revolution. For example, George Herring's America's Longest War portrays American involvement not as a product of policymaker errors or personality quirks, but rather as the logical outgrowth of "containment." Since I was never satisfied with containment's simplistic conception of the breakup of the colonial world, the war always seemed a mysterious product of d! ark and hidden motives of US policymakers who were ethno-centric, competitive imperial managers incapable of comprehending the commitment to liberation and independence of the Vietnamese people, or of even entertaining the possibility that the USSR was a legitimate civilization or at least the product of historical forces. William Duiker's Sacred War, documenting the Vietnamese experience of the war, only confirmed my despair over the stupid arrogance of the American ruling class. Ho Chi Minh was so obviously right that only the devil himself could have guided America's hand.
Then I read Olson and Roberts' Where the Domino Fell. The authors don't really offer a new perspective on any of the particulars, but they achieve a balance of all actors that make the whole monstrosity at least seem plausible, the stupidity at least understandable. American oversimplifications find their place in the larger constellation of factors, and the war begins to be comprehensible. Vietnamese nationalism is given its proper context of twenty centuries, showing an Asian sage's sense of time and history that the nouveau-riche kid named America couldn't appreciate. The French are shown for the brutal and greedy colonists they were, first accepting huge US subsidies for their war to keep the Indochina colony, and then assuming the "I told you so" attitude once the Americans adopted the war after Dienbienphu. The American war in Vietnam is shown from the perspective of both sides, which really amounts to showing the many sides --from Diem to the Buddhists to the Khmer in Vietnam, from the hawks to the anti-war movement in the USA, the multiple perspectives are concisely explained in all their mutual relations. Whatever judgements the authors place on the merits of these perspectives, they don't allow their own opinions to eclipse the facts, which are made plain to all who will read. Even the American psychological recovery from the war is covered, with an insightful history of Hollywood Vietnam movies linked t! o the larger political evolution of these United States.
One problem with the book is the lack of footnotes, obstructing any direct investigation of the quotes and their context. The sources used seem to be all secondary, but there are no claims of original research here. The book is rather the best survey of the war I've seen, complete with a careful bibliographic essay directing the reader towards the right source for any questions provoked by this introductory book. Also included is a useful chronology, glossary, and a few interesting photos. Highly recommended reading!

Hideyuki Kikuchi's third book takes manga form through the skilled hands of artist Saiko Takaki. She takes the reader to the thirteenth millenia, where every human lives in fear of vampires. It is a land of sorcery, science and universal use of black eyeliner.

Not to give too much away to those new to VHD, this manga's story is about a human girl that falls in love with a Noble (a.k.a. vampire) anyway, D gets hired to kill Mr. Pointy Teeth and the story goes from there. Throw is some rival hunters... including someone to fill the 'hot-yet-troubled-chick' archetype that is present in all of Kikuchi's work. Be sure to see a number of mutant villains to spice everything up.

The borderline porno sexuality is greatly reduced in this volume. Also the stern character of D is accuratley portrayed. However, as is to be expected from the medium used to portray the story, no inner conflict is perceptable behind the icy exterior of D.

All in all i give it five stars because amazon will not allow 4.5. it misses a perfect 5 because all of the faces look very similar, including in relation to the past two volumes, to each other.

Each day, the author encourages you and affirms your devotion to the fast and prayer. You are reminded of who God is, what He does, who you are and your kingdom inheritance. You are given a call-to-action and declaration to help you achieve spiritual growth & maturity. I highly recommend this book as an everyday read to nurture your spirit. It should be a constant companion, along with the bible, during the 21 days of prayer and fasting.

I have done this 21 day fast before but this time it was at another level and i believe it is because of the guidance of this book. It is practical and it goes to the very deep depths of your relationship with God! An easy read yet fully packed. One will not go wrong with this one.

James T. deKay's delightful book is a wonderful read for both left-handers and those who live with them. It contains amusing facts and anecdotes about the joys and troubles of living left-handedly in a right-handed world, with amusing illustrations on nearly every page. This is the perfect book for a smile or two, but it is far from substantial. Left-handers will love finding out just how unique - and wonderful - they are, and right-handers will enjoy the insight into a backwards world. James T. deKay has also written "The Natural Superiority of the Left-Hander", "The World's Greatest Left-Handers", and "Left-Handed Kids", if you are interested in further reading.

Dated and silly, but a great read!

This book doesn't take itself seriously, and it has a lot of whimsy, but it is also packed with little-known facts about left-handedness that will save you from feeling like a klutz or an idiot. Lots of things you don't do well have nothing to do with your dexterity (itself a right-handed word), but rather with the right-hand only design of many products, even gum wrappers! This is a light-hearted, but ultimately very useful and informative book that will help you as a left-handed person to see your true value and your true place in the world. It also includes a useful list of items and activities that are left-hand friendly (like baseball!). Buy it! The price is right (I mean "correct"), and so are the contents.

A must-have for left-handed kids and adults

I bought this book for my left-handed son when he was about 3. He enjoyed reading with me the interesting and humorous anecdotes and facts depicted in it. It is fully illustrated with great drawings on every page to make it easier for kids to follow. I passed the book around to my left-handed adult friends and every single one of them enjoyed it. There are relatively few left-handed books in the market. Though this is not a seriously scientific one, it is definitely worth having in support of the left-handed people in this world. My son is now 7 and he still enjoys reading it from time to time.

Improved on the first edition

This second edition maintains it's reputation as the best bench top dermatopathology book on the market. It is concise, beautifully laid out and illustrated with an excellent differential diagnoses section attached to each described entity which really helps when you are trying to work out what a lesion might be.
For clinicians the the first chapter is an invaluable series of lists of causes for both clinical features and pathological signs with links to the relevant descriptions in the book. I find myself referring to it frequently and always finding something I had not thought about.
The Expert Consult online version of the book, which is free with the printed version, is also very good, providing access via any computer or tablet. There are many additional clinical images here that are not in the printed version which reflect Dr Rapini's background as a clinical dermatologist as well as a dermatopathologist. He was in Australia recently lecturing at our Dermpath Meeting. The book does not capture his entertaining speaking style except for occasional flashes of wit which is probably as it should be for a serious book like this. This book does not disappoint!

Great book for those starting out in Dermatopathology

Great book for those starting out in Dermatopathology. Great illustrations. If you are not use to looking at H&E stained slides you will find the clearly marked photos quite helpful. Most pathology books assume the reader knows histopathology, this book does not and point out individual cells and histological structures to the reader. More books should do this, It makes it so much easier for people to get it ,quickly.

This is a fantastic book. Anyone signing out skin biopsies needs to have this book right near their scope. It has great lists of differential diagnoses in the first chapter, and the photomicrographs are excellent throughout the book. Highly recommend.
