An S&M book from one of the best in the field

For anyone who is interested in either entering the aura of leathersex or who is all ready involved, Leatherman's Handbook II is a must read. Written by Larry Townsend who is well respected within the leather world and also a contributor to the male bondage magazine, Bound and Gagged, this book follows along with his style. This is an easy book to read and understand with chapters dealing with anything from bondage techniques, bondage material, s&m techniques, meeting a partner and much more. Each chapter generally has a story that is relevant to the chapter's subject matter.
All though the book is more gay oriented much that is said can be applied to any situation. The picking of a partner is very important and Townsend goes into detail on this issue. Townsend also touches upon the use of drugs as well as other issues.
I enjoyed reading the book and found that its material was well written and worthy as a strong reference manual for what it discusses.
This book is certainly worth the high rating of "10".

In this accessible yet provocative text, Barry Hindess examines key Western discourses of power, ranging from Hobbes’ discussion of sovereign power to Foucault’s account of government.

Hindess identifies two conceptions of power which have dominated modern political thought: power quantitative capacity to act, and power as resting on consent, and therefore involving also the right to act. The book explores the assumptions underlying both of these conceptions, and draws out the implications of these for the manner in which the exercise of power, and government, have been understood. It includes and examination of Foucault’s radical critique of conventional approaches to the study of power, taking up the question of whether Faucault himself escapes the problems and presuppositions which he identifies in the work of others. Elucidating and dissecting existing discourses of power, Hindess concludes that these obscure fundamental problems with contemporary Western understandings of society and politics.

Discourses of Power will be welcomed as an important contribution to one of the major debates in social and political theory.

About the Author

The Saga of the Aryan Race is a historical epic about the origins of the Aryan people. The second volume, The Advent of Asho Zarathustra, presents the life of the ancient Aryan Prophet Zarathustra, eight thousand years ago. When the Earth-Soul cried out for a saviour, Zarathustra was born to redeem the ancient Aryan faith. The first two volumes of the Saga were first published in the Mumbai newspaper Jam-e-Jamshed in 1987-1988 and 1992, when they proved to be very popular. They were then published in book form in India and reprinted several times. This book is the first presentation of the Saga in the West. The remaining three volumes are to be published shortly by Arktos. The author, Porus Homi Havewala, born in India, is descended from the Aryan forefathers who had settled in Iran. A group of Aryans, known as Parsi Zoroastrians, migrated to India after the Arab conquest of Iran in order to preserve their ancient Aryan religion. The aim of the author in writing this book is to inspire his fellow Aryan Zoroastrians, especially the young, with faith and righteous pride in their religion like their Aryan ancestors in ancient times, as well as to educate others about their remarkable history and beliefs.

The Saga of the Aryan Race

This is an interesting book. It is written by a Zoroastrian author, from India, and concerns the "history of the Aryan Race". The style is simplistic but effective, in the vein of epic sagas of the Indian variety. We get to follow a number of heroic characters (mainly manly men and fair ladies of various stripes), as they leave their home in the polar region to conquer the world. The book is based on a Zoroastrian world-view (according to which zoroastrianism, or rather the worship of Ahura Mazda, is the original Indo-European religion, though it has become diluted in both Europe and elsewhere), and as the wanderings of the Aryans continue, we finally end up in the area of Iran. Here Zoroaster/Zarathustra is born to restore the True Religion.

The intention of the book is to inspire pride in the author's fellow Zoroastrians. The communities of Parsis and Irani Zoroastrians are dwindling on a global scale due to low birthrates and intermarriage causing children to be raised outside the faith, as well as (I would guess) the severity of the Islamic repression in Iran, which has reduced the Zoroastrian population in Iran to a minimal fraction. This is probably one of the reasons why the book is so simple in style - while it is a really good read for an adult, it is not too complex to be understood even by children.

I can only wish Porus the best of luck in his struggle to maintain and restore his once-proud community to health. His book is an impressive effort to write a modern day spiritual epic.

A Popular, Serialized Work about Zoroastrianism

In Iran and India, "Aryan" is the tribal forbearers of these modern nations, in the same way "Anglo-Saxons" are the tribal forbearers of the United States. This book, The Saga of the Aryan Race, seeks to flesh out this tribes story by connecting it to the ancient scriptures of the Zoroastrianism religion.

The book is a compilation of a series about the Aryans moving from their mythical home in the Arctic to Iran. They must survive against nature and savage man, carry out good marriages to preserve their people, and follow their religion.

What is striking is just how similar the Zoroastrian faith is to Christianity in many ways. The story is much like the early Puritan founders of Massachusetts Bay Colony. One wonders if Indo-European expansion across the globe has been carried out by means of a common pattern.

The book is best read and understood by a person familiar with Zoroastrian ideas.

Much better than Talageri's Rig Veda and The Avesta

Talageri researches beautifully but lacks an analytical thought process - A hundred and twenty years ago, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak proved in his seminal work 'Arctic Home In The Vedas ; An Ignored Historical Research" in 1885 that the original home of the Aryans was in the Arctic. So this poop about Aryans migrating outwards from the Land of the Black Monkey just doesn't jell. Must be an excellent book but I'll wait for the paperback edition which is cheaper. Moreover, renowned archaeo-astronomer Nilesh Nilkanth Oak has made Talageri look like a confused clown in his 2 books 'When Did the Mahabharata War Happen?: The Mystery of Arundhati' and 'The Historic Rama: Indian Civilization at the End of Pleistocene' so I'll reserve my verdict . . .

The subject is interesting though, and anyone interested in it will find it much more convincing (and cheaper) to read the 3-volume historical fiction by Porus Homi Havewala "The Saga of the Aryan Race" (Paperback) – April 6, 2011 . . .

A must-have and timely book for WordPress developers

A formula for success:

1. Put together an idea and outline for a book that hasn't been covered in-depth before.
2. Gather three of the most talented WordPress developers/writers and have them write the book.
3. Release the book and watch the Elves return back to Middle Earth to rejoice with men.

Professional Plugin Development, written by Ozh Richard, Justin Tadlock, and Brad Williams, is a much-needed and very timely book.

There have been several aspiring developers that have approached me saying they needed a start-from-the-basics WordPress plugin development book. And while Professional Plugin Development does teach the basics of plugin development, it quickly moves on to much more complex topics.

The book covers the topics I care most about, such as:

* WordPress Plugin Foundation and Best Practices
* WordPress Security
* WordPress Actions and Filters (aka, hooks)
* And Ajax

But the book goes beyond basic plugin development. It teaches you about plugin options, CRON for scheduling common tasks, storing data (whether it is via post types, transients, or options), the HTTP API (for retrieving remote data), users (how to set up roles and capabilities), localization (err, internationalization), and how to test plugin performance.

For a novice PHP and WordPress developer, this is a good starting point. But don't think of this book as your way to learn PHP, jQuery, or even basic WordPress (there's WordPress for Dummies for that).

This is a book written by developers for developers. And I must say that I learned a lot from this book, and I've been developing WordPress plugins and themes for almost six years.

Here are the things I learned most from this book:

* The Why. I've used a lot of the techniques from the book before, but now I have a better understanding of why the techniques should be implemented. An example is security and WordPress coding best practices.
* Rewrites and Cron. These two topics escape me (no pun intended) for some reason, but I have a much better understanding of how everything works behind the scenes.
* Security. Security can not be stressed enough, and very solid security tips are sprinkled throughout the book (and the topic even receives treatment via its own dedicated chapter).
* Multisite. I've been working with multisite for almost a year now, and it's a topic I'm still learning in-depth. The chapter gives a great explanation of terms and common pitfalls.

Last, but certainly not least, the book goes into great detail for what you should do after you've released a plugin, whether you want to release it for free in the official WordPress repo, or have it available exclusively on your own site (whether commercial or free). The book explains marketing, how to set up automatic updates (albeit a bit glossed over), and how to get the plugin on the official repo.

This is a highly recommended book, whether it be the print version, or digital.

It takes true experience to create a book this useful

The first time I went to a WordCamp presentation, the speaker said off-hand, "before I do anything, I check Justin Tadlock's site to see if he's written a tutorial." Before that day, I had never depended on anything but the Codex for support when I wrote plug-ins ... and you could tell by looking at my code.

Since then, I've become a frequent reader of Justin's blog, I've subscribed to several mailing lists for code, and I've started following quality developers - namely the authors of this book - on Twitter. It's been a slow start, but it's changed the way I look at open source and development in general.

And now comes a book written by three of the most respected developers in the WordPress community. It's well written, honest, and comes from a collective background of collaboration and been-there-done-that experience. I've been working with WordPress for more than 4 years now, and this is by far the best reference I've seen to date ... both for developers just starting with the project and for seasoned professionals who build their business on WordPress.

I've seen code written by all three of these developers, built my own systems on the shoulders of their outstanding work, and watched several others grow as developers following after their example. I can't think of any team more qualified to write about WordPress plug-in development, and I can't think of anyone else who'd do a better job.

This is an outstanding book and was definitely worth the 2-month pre-order wait to have a physical copy on my desk to mark up and turn back to. Though I'm confident that the eBook version will be just as useful for those who can't wait for overnight shipping to deliver! :-)

A must-read for WordPress developers

There aren't many great WordPress books on the market and the topics covered here are not explained in any comprehensive way in the existing online resources. The authors have managed to distill everything you could possibly need to know about plugin development into a well-organized, well-written reference book that I've been calling on a couple of times a week.

Apart from the basics of plug-in development - which it explains very effectively - there are many advanced subjects that any plug-in developer needs to understand. It delves into WordPress actions and hooks, security, best practices, Ajax, the HTTP API, regionalization and how to test for performance.

The book doesn't pretend to teach you PHP and WordPress - you need to be well versed in both to get the most from the material. But if you want to develop plug-ins for either the community or commercial audience, everything you need to know is in here. As an aside, the authors are very well respected WordPress coders so you really couldn't hope to learn from better teachers.

Great intro to punching.

I love his writing style which gives it a 1920's feel about it, like your learning from an old timey boxing coach. The techniques are well described and although I wouldn't go around picking fights with what you learn, the book really gives you a clear visualization of why various moves work or don't work.
