A practical piece

A straightforwardly organized, practical piece. It assumes some exposure to Mollison or Holmgren and does not go beyond them conceptually; however, it provides immediate practical detail with respect to developing and teaching permaculture classes, and a relatively simple framework for teaching that may not be obvious from works with the depth and scope of Mollison's Designer's Manual.

Beautiful and excellent for a diverse audience

This is one of the best books around on applying (perceptual/cognitive/research) psychological principals to graphics and visualizations. This book really stands out for three reasons, it's concise (but not overly brief) discussion of relevant psychology (memory/cognition/perception) plus the incredible examples for graphic designers and the set of references. The closest competitors are books by Few Now You See It: Simple Visualization Techniques for Quantitative Analysis (which covers similar psych issues but is horribly wordy) or Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data (which reads well but focuses more on clean scientific graphs) or the famous books by Tufte . Relative to other books, this one has a great deal more information on how to integrate art with information. After the book you will see graphics and think about how a designer could have done a better job in guiding the reader's eye to the intended information in a poster or how to design a better handout showing a process like how part of the body works or how to put together a complicated device. The graphics in the book REALLY stand out and support the authors writing. As a researcher I hate to see people state "facts" or "hypotheses" about how people think without providing supporting evidence. This book has a very respectable set of references. So, rather than pontificating about the "right" way to do graphics there are references to relevant (experimental psych) articles.

Basically, this book is the complete package. It could be a great coffee table book or on a shelf in a scientific library.

This book provides a wide-ranging and practical understanding of how humans interpret visual information, then describes principles for applying that knowledge to the creation of compelling, memorable and informative graphics. So often, graphic designers are trained to think in terms of visual elegance, but not in terms of how people perceive graphical information. This book fills in the knowledge gap for graphic designers as well as instructional designers and other professionals wondering how to best transmit complex information in a graphical format.

The collection of hundreds of contemporary graphic and information designs from around the world is stunning, and could have made a coffee table book or inspiration book on their own. The substantive text leads the reader on a journey to better understand the human mind and learn how to create more profound and valuable graphics. This beautifully designed and printed how-to book contains hundreds of images that are organized into chapters that explain a variety of key principles of visualization, from how to manipulate a viewer's eye to simplifying data and images. Most of the graphics in the book are spectacular while others aren't as effective at visualizing their content, but each one teaches a lesson and was chosen for that purpose. As the former director of information graphics at Newsweek and now a university instructor who teaches students how to visualize information, this book is as useful for professionals as it is for people who are new to the field of visualization, even though they may not have the skills to create many of the graphics shown. The fundamental principals of visualization outlined here apply to all ranges of imagery, from the fancy 3D model to an a simple idea scribbled on a napkin.

The actual plot in the book is really small and fluff around it was very predictable.

In most of the books written by this author, the plot revolves around someone setting up a honey trap and invariably it is a lady....

The more I read, all his books are monotonous resembling a movie script than and novel...

Interesting plot that keeps one hooked till the end. This is my first Ravi Subramanian book and found this racy thriller difficult to put down.

One point of improvement that I found was the presence of a number of spelling errors in the e-book that needs to be corrected.

About the Author
Robert Gendler is the world's leading amateur astrophotographer. A physician who spends his free time taking pictures of the night sky, he is the author and photographer of A Year in the Life of the Universe, and his images appear regularly in Sky & Telescope magazine. Incredible!!!!

After I received this book, I downloaded quite a few of the author's images from [...] and had them framed for my home. I can't imagine anything as beautiful as our universe! Rob Gendler's incredible efforts are bringing an awesome appreciation of the universe to our planet. I'm ordering 6 now, and probably a lot more, as holiday gifts.

A grand photographic reference

Beautifully done by a world class imager. During any season of the year the deep sky offers wonderous objects of beauty and wonder. Dr. Rob Gendler has captured the beauty of galaxies and nebula in a spectacular display of color and accompanies each image with useful descriptions.

Truly a book for everyone

I put off buying this book for an entire year. I figured that between the internet and my other coffee-table gee-whiz books, the last thing I needed was another book full of pretty pictures. I was so wrong. Take Rob Gendler's gorgeous astrophotos--there is a shot of Omega Centauri in here that makes me want to weep!--add concise, up-to-date descriptions, coordinates, seasonal sky maps, with every object ranked by right ascension, and you've got a pretty-picture book that doubles as a deep-sky guide and observing planner for backyard astronomers. Plus you will pick the book up just to leaf through it and enjoy it. And the production value is unbelievable, with a solid hardcover and excellent full-color reproduction on heavy glossy paper. I have no idea how they are able to sell this book at this price, but hey, their loss is your gain.

If you are a stargazer, you WILL use this book, and when you do, you will kick yourself for not getting it sooner.

If you're not a stargazer, no worries--if you are even remotely interested in the universe, you will enjoy this book. And it might inspire you to look up.
