Definitive book on architectural planning

This is the state of the art in planning information. Editorially, this is the finest work being done in the world, with all issues of book production
(graphic presentation, architectonic and conceptual analysis, format, etc.) of the highest quality. Nothing currently available compares. Essential reference for students and architects.

A ridiculously handy reference.

I've desired this since I had access to it in an office at which I once worked. Now it's in paperback, revised, and cheap. The editors have a great sense of which projects merit inclusion, offering some basic works and some slightly more radical projects. The brilliant system of scaling everything to the same ratio (and the clever, included transparent scale ruler) makes this truly an efficient reference manual and not just some more architectural pornography.

I find I use this both in work (and for casual browsing) far more often than I really use the sexy full color architecture books of the moment that seem to flood the landscape.

I only have one or two complaints: I'd love to see some of the plans, whose reproduction leaves a lot to be desired, redrawn. Also, I'd love to see some scaled sections for the included projects, since many or the included works transcend full discussion in plan. I guess that would be antithetical given the book title, however.

All said, highly recommended.

An excellent review of housing types

This is certainly a book that many who deal with housing design have felt lacking from their libraries. Being an excellent review of housing types of the last century, mainlyafter modernism,it is an excellent reference book for those in need of an historical overview of housing. The categories into which the examples are divided into is logical, which helps in comparing different types of housing. It is also a pleasure to read it as the book is designed in very elegant and clear lines. Unfortunately it costs too much for me but for those who can afford it, it will be a great pleasure to own.

For the manager Not for the engineer

I've been a hardware engineer for six years and have seen many of my designs vanish into firmware. It was time to learn how to program a microcontroller, but this book was not much help.

The index often points to the wrong page - close, but usually a page or two off. There are no appendixes for quick reference. The illustrations vaguely correlate to the text.

The chapter on the assembly language begins: "This book is not intended to be a manual on programming.." and it truly does not teach assembly. There are several example codes with virtually no explanation and there are no programs with which to practise.

Much of the chapter on the microcontroller (68hc11 used as the basis) talks about component placement on the PCB or noise, which is nice to know but not fundamental in learning how to program the chip. The rest of this chapter is a gloss over which concludes: "Although the reader may never program or design a microcontroller system..." Then why am I reading it? Well, you might read it if you worked WITH a microcontroller engineer but were NOT a microcontroller engineer and never intended to become one.

There are enough buzz words in here to make you sound good, but if you really want to learn the 68hc11, find another book.

Beginner's handbook

Barely scratches the surface of the content implied by the title. This book contains far too much introductory material aimed at an audience of neophytes. A great deal of the practical information in the book can be obtained gratis from the application notes available from the manufacturer. A real dissappointment.

About the Author
Robert L. Zimdahl is a Professor of Weed Science at Colorado State University. He received his Ph.D. in Agronomy from Oregon State University. Among his many honors and awards, Dr. Zimdahl was elected a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America in 1986 and currently serves as editor of that society’s journal, Weed Science. He has been a member of several international task forces and has authored a number of books and articles on the subject of weed science.

A Super-Hero in the eyes of his daughter, Vince Bonaventura is a dashing, fancy-dressing tailor/farmer born in the dark, cypress bayous of northern Louisiana near Mooringsport. In 1950, he begins to seek his fame and fortune by selling Fuller Brush door-to-door around the south while raising his infant daughter. An old childhood "friend" Bannister Willis stashes 5 kilos of uncut cocaine in the trunk of his Studebaker at a gas station in the backwaters of Tennessee, forcing Vince to mysteriously mail it General Delivery to the Princeton Department of Archaeology where it will be picked up. This is the beginning of a "go-round" with the early DEA, FBI and a couple of mob cartels.

Back by the area of his old family home near Caddo Lake in the bayou, Vince rescues a starving 6 week old black and white bulldog puppy which accompanies him and his daughter on their travels. He has a "matching thing" so he names the puppy Romeo to match his daughter's name (Julietta/Julie) and buys himself and Julie black and white saddle shoes to match the dog's spots.

Emma, Julie's mother, died from Cholera the same year Julie was born, so the puppy is Vince's comfort and crying pillow. A puppy and an infant are just the thing Vince needs right now. Emma was his wife, but also his friend and he truly misses her. He does not find a girlfriend until Julie is almost eight.

This book takes place from 1950 to 1959 and contains as much memorabilia from the fifties as possible. It is the first volume in a historical progression into the sixties (second book will be entitled "TIE DYE" and is projected to be available summer 2016). One can see the slow evolution of Julietta Bonaventura into a smart, talented hippie chick and politically astute observer of all the civil rights changes at the end of the fifties and into the Age of Aquarius.

The dream of her father to be successful comes true, as well as the dreams of the south to breathe free. Not bad for a Fuller Brush man, Electro-lux salesman and purveyor of the Encyclopedia Britannica with the new, heavy wooden shelf that comes with it.

Finally freeing himself and his daughter from the drug cartel and the Boston mob, Vince finds a fine desk job with Sears Catalog in Chicago and starts his own men's wear tailoring shop, working inside -- out of the vagaries of the weather. He buys a Corvette and a Panhead Harley motorcycle, and celebrates with his new girlfriend, Chun-hua, a Chinese-American law student from the University of Chicago, his first love after the death of his wife, Emma.

Zara Brooks-Watson also writes the Silver Lake Cozy Mysteries under the pseudonym of Sophia Watson.

A wonderful work of fiction!

Everybody should read this book! I mean, everybody! It’s one of those gems that you don’t expect to come across amongst the indie authors, which are destined to be classics. This book is one of those gems.
It has everything: a finely written setting which transfers you to the 50’s America, great characters you love from page one, great story line and what I appreciate most in all books, a fine literary language. The author’s story-telling talent is undoubtable, reading “Jitterbug” was most enjoyable.
The plot is very gripping; basically it follows the main character Vince Bonaventura – son of Italian immigrants, and his little daughter Julie as they leave the comforts of their old home in the South behind, and take a journey to find a new, better life in the North. But it’s not all that easy when Vince gets dragged into the drug trafficking business and gets caught in between two mob families. Trying to protect his daughter, Vince runs to Mexico, and on his way he discovers that he’s wanted for murder that he didn’t commit…
The real treat for me was what a wonderful job Ms. Brooks-Watson did in creating a setting for her novel. She is showing, not just telling her story, and you feel the heat on a summer day, you hear the music in the background, you hear the coyotes howl in a Mexican desert, you are there, together with the characters.
I really can’t recommend this book enough. A wonderful work of fiction!

Wow! Right from the start I was entranced by the author's ability to paint the scene. The story felt so real and I was drawn to the main character. 1950's Chicago, Vince is determined to take his daughter and go in search of a better life up North. But things are not that simple. He falls into the underworld of drug trafficking and mobsters. And then to top it all off...he learns at the worst possible time that he is wanted for murder. The plot builds nicely, with the author creating and building upon the world around me. This is an interesting story, its own unique twist of historical fiction and mystery. This is one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time, and I truly enjoyed the author's storytelling abilities. She wove the story around me, creating a masterpiece I'll never forget. Anyone who enjoys mysteries and great writing will be enthralled by it! Great job! Easily a 5 star read!!! I'm looking forward to reading more works by this author.
