Chronicle of a Camera: The Arriflex 35 in North America, 1945-1972, by Norris Pope

“Chronicle of a Camera should be essential reading for anyone interested in how independent narrative cinema became a reality in the United States.”

―Charles V. Eidsvik, author of Cineliteracy: Film Among the Arts

This volume provides a history of the most consequential 35mm motion picture camera introduced in North America in the quarter century following the Second World War: the Arriflex 35. It traces the North American history of this camera from 1945 through 1972―when the first lightweight, self-blimped 35mm cameras became available.

Chronicle of a Camera emphasizes theatrical film production, documenting the Arriflex’s increasingly important role in expanding the range of production choices, styles, and even content of American motion pictures in this period. The book’s exploration culminates most strikingly in examples found in feature films dating from the 1960s and early 1970s, including a number of films associated with what came to be known as the “Hollywood New Wave.” The author shows that the Arriflex prompted important innovation in three key areas: it greatly facilitated and encouraged location shooting; it gave cinematographers new options for intensifying visual style and content; and it stimulated low-budget and independent production. Films in which the Arriflex played an absolutely central role include Bullitt, The French Connection, and, most significantly, Easy Rider. Using an Arriflex for car-mounted shots, hand-held shots, and zoom-lens shots led to greater cinematic realism and personal expression.

Review

“Norris Pope’s Chronicle of a Camera reads oddly like a thriller documenting how a collection of ornery and independent visual storytellers used a remarkable tool, the Arriflex II, to change how films are made and to change what kinds of films are possible in America. Pope is an oddity, an academic who illuminates the story of a camera he uses and loves. The Arriflex II allowed cinematographers and directors to work on location, telling stories outside of Hollywood’s sound stage production formulas and practices. From the end of World War II until the late 1970s, these artists created a film counterculture that was a worthy artistic competitor to the European cinema. That counterculture in turn provided heroes for a film school generation that wanted to believe that independent and personal cinema is possible in America. Europeans knew the Arri was tough, reliable, portable, and affordable. How it enabled our own new waves in America, despite industry opposition, is a story Pope tells accurately and readably. Chronicle of a Camera should be essential reading for anyone interested in how independent narrative cinema became a reality in the United States.”

―Charles V. Eidsvik, author of Cineliteracy: Film Among the Arts

An Amazing story of Arri Camera in North America
By Frank Paul Perez
Where do you start? An amazing well written book by my friend Norris Pope, scholar and filmmaker. In chapter 6 he writes about how Roger Corman is shooting, "The Young Racers" with Arri Cameras. A quote from the book: "...one of which was often operated by Francis Ford Coppola-who has been hired to record sound..." I get a kick out of the thought Francis Ford Coppola as a sound guy. Anyway, many more interesting stories in the book.

Through and Engaging
By Caetlin Benson-Allott
I wish I had time to say more, but I just needed to drop a note and say how impressed I was by this book. I learned so much, and the writer manages a lot of technical details with clear and engaging writing. I never thought a technical history would be so artistically insightful or fun to read.

Pacific Skies, by Jerome Klinkowitz

From 1941 to 1945 the skies over the Pacific Ocean afforded the broadest arena for battle and the fiercest action of air combat during World War II. It was in the air above the Pacific that America's involvement in the war began. It was in these skies that air power launched from carriers became a new form of engagement and where the war ultimately ended with kamikaze attacks and with atomic bombs dropped over Japan.

Throughout the conflict American flyers felt a compelling call to supplement the official news and military reports. In vivid accounts written soon after combat and in reflective memoirs recorded in the years after peace came, both pilots and crew members detailed their stories of the action that occurred in the embattled skies. Their first-person testimonies describe a style of warfare invented at the moment of need and at a time when the outcome was anything but certain.

Gathering more than a hundred personal narratives from Americans and from Japanese, Pacific Skies recounts a history of air combat in the Pacific theater. Included are the words of such famous aces and bomber pilots as Joe Foss, Pappy Boyington, Dick Bong, and Curtis Lemay, as well as the words of many rank-and-file airmen. Together their stories express fierce individualism and resourcefulness and convey the vast panorama of war that included the skies over Pearl Harbor, Wake, and Guadalcanal and missions from Saipan and Tinian.

As Pacific Skies recounts the perilous lives of pilots in their own words, Jerome Klinkowitz weaves the individual stories into a gripping historical narrative that exposes the shades of truth and fiction that can become blurred over time. A book about experiencing and remembering, Pacific Skies also is a story of unique perspectives on the war.

Jerome Klinkowitz, a professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa, is the author of forty books, including such World War II titles as Their Finest Hours, Yanks over Europe, and With Tigers over China.

Interesting Take on the Pacific Air War!
By Mike O'Connor
There have been many memoirs and histories of the air war in the Pacific published. Some are by famous fliers like Pappy Boyington and George Kenney; others by less well-known Pacific vets. Some were published during the war; others decades later. University professor Jerome Klinkowitz takes over 100 such narratives and weaves them into a unique chronicle of air combat.

PACIFIC SKIES, published in 2004 by University Press of Mississippi, offers a fresh and fascinating look at American fliers in combat. He incorporates the reminiscences of various combatants within a framework that sets the stage for that veteran's narrative and then provides perspective and commentary on what that person wrote. In some cases the individual's take on "what happened" was wildly inaccurate as to results actually achieved. In other cases wartime censorship shaped what was presented. Perspectives and attitudes changed as the years passed and so on.

Many of the works referenced in Klinkowitz's book - CARRIER COMBAT, BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP, GRIM REAPERS, I COULD NEVER BE SO LUCKY AGAIN, IRON EAGLE, DAUNTLESS HELLDIVERS and PUSHING THE ENVELOPE - are considered classics in the field. Klinkowitz's learned commentary on each makes for fascinating reading and provides new insights into the original.

While PACIFIC SKIES isn't your conventional "I was there" military history, it is a marvelous, entertaining and thought-provoking read. As I was reading it, I kept thinking of Paul Harvey's tag-line: "And now you know...the rest of the story" and how much that fit PACIFIC SKIES. Highly recommended.

An overview of the air war in the Pacific Theatre
By Lewis T. Fitch
This book is a necessarily shortened version of the air war in the Pacific, but is particularly useful in giving specific references in the published literature for each facet mentioned. Most of the major players and incidents are given some coverage, but a book by the people involved is given for each one. This includes Japanese as well as American and English sources. There is a moderately long section on the various factors considered in the deployment of the two atomic bombs, as well as discussion on the personnel involved.

just glad it can be expensed

One star is a stretch.....I agree with the other comments, this seems to be a Power Point Presentation for a luncheon meeting that has a time factor to fill. There is very little information in this book that cannot be found on the Internet. It is certainly not worth the cost, just glad it can be expensed.

I thought this was written tongue-in-cheek, but sadly realized that the author was serious. Remember writing term papers, where you needed to fill N pages, so you just used empty double-speak for ten pages? That's this book.
