Extravagant claims for a 'basic' book

In my opinion, the description for this "basic" ebook makes extravagant claims about what a reader would get from the book.
The book gives the impression that it is a first draft. It is riddled with spelling mistakes. Chord names have been placed so high above the staff that they often merge with the text above them, making them difficult or impossible to read. The sequence of topics is puzzling. For example, the topic on 'keys' is placed after the topics on 'chords', 'chord progressions' and even 'modulation'.
While the book is generally quite easy to read, there are places where I had to read a section a number of times to work out what the author was 'getting at'. For example, the topic on the "Circle of Functional V7-I" begins with these sentences: "Think of C as the I chord. Next think of it as a V7. As a V7 chord it must resolve to F because F is the I of C and the purpose of every V7 chord is to resolve to a I chord." ["because F is the I of C" ?? - what the author means here, is that the function of a chord depends on the key one is in. For example, in C Major a C chord functions as an I chord. However, in F Major a C chord functions as a V chord. So, a C chord followed by an F chord can be viewed as a V-I progression in F Major. Next, an F chord can be viewed as a V chord in Bb major etc. Continue in this way and you end up with a circle of V-I (or V7-I) chords in every key.]
One of the repeated statements is: "Functional Tonal Harmony demands that a chord be either Tonic or Dominant" (I or V). The author briefly explains why he views chords as reducible to either 'tonic' or 'dominant' (with the exception of the diminished chord) - this is not the usual way chords are viewed. The author further states that the diminished chord has no root - technically, a diminished chord has more than one possible root.
The book covers numerous topics which are very briefly described. The "Table of Contents" lists 65 topics (averaging a bit over a page per topic - and this includes the music examples, some of which take up one or more pages). Many of the topics covered would take up whole chapters in a typical harmony textbook. Some of the topics covered are usually excluded in basic harmony texts because they are considered to be too advanced. I think a beginner would struggle with some of the content of the book - due to superficial coverage of the topics.
On the positive side, the book provides a different way of looking at chords, is inexpensive and there are relatively few pages to read.

Ame este libro! Una amiga me lo recomendo ya que estaba pasando por unos momentos dificiles, al leerlo me di cuenta que no estoy sola y que ahi tantas maneras de ser mas feliz en mi vida y tener mas paz. Al principio no estaba muy segura ya que pense que solo hablaria de espiritualidad pero ese no es el unico tema en este libro, habla de tantos factores mas de los cuales tenemos que aplicar a nuestras nuestras vidas para encontrar sabiduria y un mejor bien estar. A valuable resource

As a teacher of English as a Second Language, I have used many different picture dictionaries. The Oxford Picture Dictionary for Kids is very well organized and uses a group of characters that provide continuity throughout the dictionary. These characters provide a continual story line so that I use the dictionary not only for "finding words," but also as a base for teaching content-area information. The pictures are clear and well-defined and cover a large vocabulary spectrum.

It's A Fun Read

There are superhero comic books, movies, and television shows that I would recommend even to friends with no pre-existing interest in the genre. That redefine what you think a superhero comic or cartoon can be. Or that employ the fantastic and phantasmagorical to address in metaphor the great ultimates of literary fiction.

This is not such a book.

What we have here is neither more nor less than an entertaining, well told, and engaging story. I wouldn't exactly say I came away deeply enriched by the experience of having read it, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless.

If you're looking for something a little more concrete, this is the story of an emerging teen superhero - "Invincible" - as he goes from finding his superpowers to finding his place in the world. So like I said, nothing genre-redefining, but it's a fun read. Of course, because this is an Image title as opposed to Marvel or DC, some of the places it's prepared to go are a lot darker and more violent than you're likely to find in the entrenched cosmologies of the old boys - at least in their canonical universes.

The art is simple, straightforward, and above all, uncluttered. Nothing to go into raptures about, but it does the job. Ottley, Walker and Crabtree all seem far more concerned with doing their part in telling a story than making a stylistic statement. It's at once the greatest strength and the greatest weakness of their work.

Bottom line: this is a good, solid, superhero comic. Good enough that I just ordered volumes 2 and 3. If you do love the capes and spandex set, this is definitely for you. But... if not, then you should probably just move on to the next option. Maybe a romance or a western. Or even a pirate comic.

Or whatever the Hell it is you people who don't like superheros read.

Kirkmans finest

Robert kirkman is always recognized for his comic book the walking dead with it spawning a TV show and a spinoff show which are both great I myself never miss an episode but invincible is his best work in my opinion. The series mixes great superheroics by a great assortment of characters with fantastic art (other than the first story arc and even that art is decent) that only gets better as the series progresses. Another great thing about the series is that since this is kirkmans property he allows its characters to grow and change dramatically which gets you more invested by making you feel as if you are growing with these characters from invincibles first day as a superhero as a teenager to him getting married and having a child. In conclusion this volume is a great way to get the first few story arcs under your belt for a nice low price as well as them having a wonderful shelf look when you collect and read all 10 of them.

Robert Kirkman continues to amaze.

Invincible is a super-hero title in the midst of an industry that is filled with super-hero titles. I have been reading these types of comics since I was a kid...over thirty years now...and I decided to give this a try because it had gotten so many good reviews. I bought this volume thinking I might get volume 2 in a few months or so. I was immediately hooked on this title. The art is GREAT! The writing is BETTER! This book is (in my opinion) simply put: One of the BEST super-hero books EVER written. I compare it to the original Spiderman that captured my imagination so many years ago. The story is superbly crafted and the artwork jumps off the page and explodes on my corneas! I feel I should warn against letting young kids read this title due to some heavy amounts of blood during the amazing knock down drag out fight scenes. They are depicted in grisly detail and, while very bloody, are more exciting than most comic book battles. The hero of the story is portrayed realistically and as a college freshman aged kid, he faces a lot of hard decisions. Kirkman writes it like he had lived it...it is believable and he adds just the right amount of humor. I have already told many of my friends to go pick up this title, and I would definitely recommend it. The Ultimate Collection is excellent. BIG BOLD colorful pages, nice sturdy hardcovers, and sewn bindings that let you fully open the book wide so you can see every inch of these amazing stories. These are characters that I think will stand the test of time just like Spidey or The Bat.

The definitive JPEG book for programmers

This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in understanding the JPEG standard. It has two distinct parts.
The second half is the JPEG standard itself. It contains all the technical details of how JPEG works, including pseudocode flow charts, and test data to verify JPEG compliance.
The first half is the author's (less formal) understanding of the JPEG standard, where he explains the details of the standard which might be unclear to the novice.
Everything from the aspects of the human visual system, to the mathematics of Discrete Cosine Transformation, to entropy coding, to JPEG file organization is explained.
I knew nothing about image processing before studying this book. After studying this book (for a long time) I was able to write a complete application and have total control over reading and writing JPG files.

A "must have" for anyone working with the details of JPEG

Created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the JPEG standard defines a toolkit of processes for lossy and lossless encoding and decoding of continuous-tone still images. This guide, which includes the the complete text of the ISO JPEG standards DIS 10918-1 and draft DIS 10918-2, offers detailed information on the JPEG modes of operation, signaling conventions, and structure of compressed data. It also provides a general review of image-coding techniques, so it does not assume the reader has expert status in data compression and coding techniques.

This is by far the most complete exposition of JPEG in existence. It's written by two people who know what they are talking about: both served on the ISO JPEG standards committee. If you want to know how JPEG works or why it works that way, this is the book to have. There are a number of errors that were in the first printing of this book that were all repaired in the second printing. The official specification of JPEG is not currently available on-line, and is not likely ever to be available for free because of ISO and ITU copyright restrictions, which makes it valuable to have in this book.

If you study this book in depth, you should be able to write programs that completely control the reading and writing of JPEG image files. This is different from most other books that contain scattered information on the JPEG standard and on image compression, but contain insufficient information for programmers who actually need to work with the standard on a pixel-by-pixel level. Also, considering this book was published by an "academic publisher", I was surprised at its accessible tone and numerous helpful diagrams. Note that if you are interested in JPEG2000, that this book does not contain information on that standard. The following is the table of contents:

Bad quality reprint

This is a reprint of the original JPEG book. Unfortunately, the publisher has scanned in the original. As a result, all of the photographs that are supposed to show the compression behavior and artifacts, show the scanned halftone artifacts instead.

Get the original book if you possibly can.

WOW!!!

I became an NLP practitioner in the mid 90's and feel like I have read "everything" written on NLP. This is one of the most "down to earth" readable selections to come along in a very long time. It is appropriate for a beginner or someone who has been studying NLP for years. It's as if a trusted friend is walking you down a path to an unknown, but exciting and enlightening destination. It is a must read for everyone who wants to tune themselves up, and have greater influence on those around them.

My first experience with Tom Hoobyar's NLP expertise

My first experience with NLP was with Tom Hoobyar himself, doing an impromptu session with me at a conference in a hotel. He said he could fix some of my "inner head trash" and asked me if there was an issue I'd like his help with. This was a decade ago.

I knew NLP worked because a lot of top platform presenters and sales people use it effectively to persuade - with embedded commands etc. Take-no-prisoners sales guys don't give a rip about theory, as long as it works. So I knew NLP wasn't hocus-pocus.

I explained how my oldest son, who then was 3 years old, had this odd way of being able to push my buttons and make me angry. I knew it was irrational and it was MY problem. And I didn't like it. I tended to get mad at him very easily. (But not either of the other two kids.) I knew it was damaging my relationship with the little guy.

Tom says, "OK Perry, describe a scene where your son does something that sets you off."

I think for a minute and say, "He walks to the refrigerator, opens it, pours himself a glass of milk. Then he drops the milk jug on the floor. It splits open and sprays milk all over the kitchen and I get MAD at him."

Tom says, "Great. Now when do you actually feel yourself getting angry? Is it when he spills the milk, or is it some other time?"

He talks me through the scene one frame at a time. I realize I get mad just *before* he spills the milk, not after.

Tom slows down the film strip even more and asks me if I'm seeing, hearing, smelling, or feeling anything else.

This is odd. Like. . . what??? I don't know what he's talking about.

But he helps me slow down the frames in my mind even more. Suddenly I realize that at a certain moment there's this sort of blue flash of light in my mind and it's a flash of ANGER. It actually has a location in space. It has color and texture.

"Great!" Tom says. "Now I want you to do something for me."

He stands up and walks across the room diagonally, from one corner to the other. He points to an invisible line on the floor and says, "This is the time line of your life. This corner is when you were born, that corner is someday when you die. Come stand here in the middle, in the present." (One of Tom Hoobyar's favorite techniques is helping you understand how you perceive your own time line. Everyone is different.)

I comply with his request. He says, "Now I want you to walk backwards on this line, towards the day you were born. Just as soon as you feel that feeling and see that blue flash of light, I want you stop."

Man, this is weird. How in the world is this going to ever work? It seems silly.

I walk backwards slowly. Suddenly about halfway back, I see that blue flash of light and I feel that same flash of anger. I stop.

Tom says, "Where are you? What do you see?"

I'm laying on my bed, with a brown bedspread, the bottom bunk of my bunkbed that I share with my brother. I'm 14 years old. I'm crying. My dad has cancer and he's about to have his kidney taken out and he may not make through the surgery. Or they might cut him open, see cancer all over the place and sew him back up and send him home to die. I'm terribly, horribly despondent.

Wow.

"Perry, somehow you attached your son's mistakes to your grief over your dad's cancer. That's not only anger, it's sadness. Every time he makes a big mistake, you relive that sad day when you were 14 years old for about 10 nanoseconds. You get angry and you don't even know why."

Dang. This actually makes logical sense.

"Is it OK if we fix your film strip?" He asks.

"Sure."

He does an exercise with me where he replaces that sadness frame on the film strip with a different memory.

After that, I don't get nearly as mad at my son anymore. The feeling wasn't completely gone, but 75% of that anger impulse went away. Just like that.

Wow. That is cool.

NLP has hard limits to what it can accomplish; it's not a cure-all. But Tom's book, based on 20 years of incredibly intense study and his NLP master practitioner experience, gives you great insight into how our minds work.

We all know we have a subconscious, but few realize there's all kinds of stuff going on one level below your awareness, flashes of sounds, smells, feelings and beliefs. They only appear for nanoseconds, but they have a huge impact on your feelings and behaviors. You don't have to get hypnotized to access them.

NLP makes it possible for you to slow the film strip down - not only for yourself but in conversations. Ways of making difficult conversations much easier. This is an easy to read book written in plain language, not "NLP-ese." There are a lot of not-very-user-friendly NLP courses and teachers out there, but this is NOT one of them.

You'll appreciate Tom as he shares with you in an easy, conversational voice what is really going on in your mind and perceptions. This is a chance to change the way you feel and communicate.

Eye Opening

Tom Hoobyar, Tom Dotz and Susan Sanders have a written a wonderfully easy to read and understand guide to relationships.
I know the title reads "NLP: The Essential Guide to Neuro-Linguistic Programing", but really, this book is about relationships.
Your relationship with your family, your co-workers, your boss, and your self. You learn about how past events have shaped you into who you are right now .. and how you can change the way you think and react to those events in order to become who you really want to be.
It's about learning how to get along without giving in. It's about how to be who you are while allowing others to be who they are .. and finding a middle ground without losing any part of yourself. It's about learning how to deal with situations without feeling intimidated or helpless. It's about looking at something from a different angle just to gain a little perspective.
Tom Hoobyar was a friend and mentor. He loved to tell stories to illustrate his points .. and they were great stories. I'm happy to say this book speaks in his voice and with his language .. and lives on in his daughter Tracy.
As a bonus, the book also provides links to a comprehensive companion website.
Bottom line: "NLP: The Essential Guide to Neuro-Linguistic Programing" is an incredibly easy to read guide on building and nurturing relationships as well as creating your life as you want it. Powerful stuff.
