About the Author
Roy Treloar has been involved with the mechanical service industry since leaving school in 1973, becoming a full time lecturer, teaching plumbing in 1985. He is currently the curriculum development manager for the Professional Training Centre at Colchester Institute where he is responsible for various plumbing, heating, gas and electrical training and assessment programmes. Roy is author of several books, including two other highly successful textbooks published by Wiley-Blackwell, the Plumbing Encyclopaedia and Gas Installation Technology.

A great reference........If you live in Great Britain

Plumbing, 4th Edition covers plumbing in Britain, so much of the terminology is different, diagrams of toilets and other fixtures are not applicable and all measurements are metric. The sections on metal roofs and metal gutters could be helpful the the select few tradesman in the US who do that kind of work. For a US homeowner, this book contains vitually no useful information.

Superb police work - documented well

A thorough, clear, well-written book of an unusual case. As a member of the same Mensa chapter, I have talked with people who knew him and something about the case, and there is some distortion - among other things, the victim's family caused neighbor problems well beyond just playing music loud, and Trepal's wife seemed just as suspicious - but the book accurately shows how courageous and Herculean efforts by police can bring people to justice for even superbly planned crimes.

Posion Mind describes a mysterious death in Central Florida

This book is well written and fast paced. It describes the death of Peggy Carr, and the subsequent conviction of George Trepal for that murder. The book is co-authored by the the Polk County, Florida Deputy Sherif who conducted the major investigation of the case. Her undercover work provided clues. While the book presents fully and fairly the eveidence in the case, it can be seen that the court system failed to carry out justice fairly. There is sufficient evidence and doubt raised by the evidence presented to legally acquit Mr. Trepal. Finally, the book hints that Dr. Diana Carr, Trepal's wife may have had a part in the crime, but presents no evidence to that end. This inuendo seems to be merely the officer/author's unfounded conclusions.

where's the ending?

This book started out interesting, and then became bogged down in an undercover officer wasting her time discovering NOTHING. After an exciting beginning, it was a disappointment in the end.
It seems all the 'danger' the officer was in was in her head, as the alledged killer never threatened her or did ANYTHING even remotely scarey, other than act like a 'geek' (which the police found suspect).
Im my opinion, Susan Goreck's undercover operation of George Trepal was a total waste of time and money, coming up with nothing solid in the end. She seemed to find him suspicious because he was an introverted loner, who happened to hold a PhD in chemistry. All the evidence was circumstantial. All the personal information revealed about George and his wife had nothing to do with the case, and is an embarassment these petty things came out in an 'official' police investigation.
Such a bad piece of undercover work is a disservice to the poor family who suffered these tragedies.
Whether George Trepal really did it or not, the undercover investigation uncovered nothing interesting. The only good news is the book was well written by ghost-writer Jeffrey Good, and the case itself is interesting.
Thank god I live in Illinois, because the Florida police seem to equate computer users with killers!

It takes a strong stomach to read the detailed accounts here of emergency accidents and crime-victim cases and some of the operations performed by Rainer, chief of surgery at the East Alabama Medical Center. A practitioner of the risk-filled specialty of neurosurgery, the author recalls his years of schooling and brain-numbing, marriage-wrecking internship and residency schedules. Along with discussing his professional satisfactions, he writes with candor about his mistakes, about the inadequacy of certain medical practices (such as burn treatments), and the misdiagnoses and impersonal care of patients that he witnessed in a veteran's hospital. This autobiographical account of the making of a neurosurgeon shows us the world of a man so consumed by his profession that no room is left for wife or children. The total dedication of self to the service of others at the expense of one's family seems a tragic choice to make; it is unfortunate that the surgeon must miss so much in life in order to save others. Dr. Rainer's tales of his successes and failures in the treatment of patientsfrom his first fumblings as a medical student to his days in private practiceare well done. He also covers his problems with medical malpractice and expulsion from his group practice. An excellent medical autobiography, recommended for most health collections. Becoming a "brain surgeon" - gruelling

Almost 30 years ago, Dr Rainer entered the medical profession as a highly trained, but extremely green and inexperienced intern. In 1987, he produced this account of his growth from new boy to neurosurgeon.

Doctors were thrown in at the deep end and - armed with libraries' worth of knowledge - were challenged to learn on the job. They would either sink or swim: taking their patients with them. Whilst the have-a-go culture is curtailed by modern expectations and medico-lawyers, the notion of "practising" medicine is no accident. Rainer and his colleagues learned their procedures on the dead, the dying and the uninsured of the hospital. Rainer vividly describes, with another new boy, putting in a first subclavian line (a big needle into the blood vessels behind the front wall of the chest) unsupervised. This was very rapidly followed by the first chest drain, when the patient's lung was punctured and collapsed.

Rainer lived, ate and slept neurosurgery. Well, lived neurosurgery. Eating and sleeping were luxuries not afforded to a trainee. It seems that training involved a continuous cycle of operating, rounding, seeing emergency cases and just a couple of hours of snatched sleep before starting over again. Like the tale told in The Intern Blues, doctors learned by doing and doing and doing. Until they could almost literally perform a procedure in their sleep. Asked, "You're not going to do my patient tired are you doctor?", Rainer replied if he didn't, he'd never operate.

For Rainer and his cohort, training and operating came first, second and third; survival fourth; family were left with the scraps. It was no surprise when marriages broke down and surgeons became married to their work. It is no surprise that Rainer, after several intense years a competent operator and good doctor, left the medical profession.

One of the best books I've ever read.

Having a keen interest in medical subjects, I bought this book at a discount book store to read. From almost the first page, I was entranced. I have since read this book at least four times (probably more). This book is the journey of a man with a total love of the practice of medicine. He tells of the grueling hours spent as an intern and as a resident, not so you will feel sorry for him, but rather to point out how medicine was his first love, many times to the detriment of the other things in his life.
Some of the stories he recounts are absolutely hillarious, others heartwrenching. The best recommendation I can give is that I have loaned it to several people and they each have given it highest acclaim. Dr. Rainer puts a tremendous amount of himself in this book, telling not only of his experiences in medicine, but also painting what is obviously a self-poitrait, warts and all.
I have spoken to Dr. Rainer in order to get my copy autographed, and he is now a malpractice attorney. If you read the book you'll understand why I mention this. Read this, you will not regret it.

After several years, I keep coming back to this book...

I first read an abridged version of "First Do No Harm" in a copy of Reader's Digest when I was around 10 or 12 years old. After that, I sought out and found this book in my local library. Dr. Ranier's writing is honest and straightforward...He doesn't glamourize or sugar-coat medicine or the sacrifices one makes on the path to becoming an M.D. He also reflects fondly on certain life-changing encounters with patients that I myself remember and think about. Dr. Ranier practices about 40 miles from me and I'd love to meet him and thank him for this book which has not only been an important part of my library for many years now, but also turned me toward the medical profession. Outstanding!

Everything a troop needs!

This wonderful book is a must-have for every Boy Scout troop, the Bible for the youth leadership of the troop. It has everything the boys need to plan their activities for the year, and even their individual meetings and outings. Activities are covered, as are games, and ceremonies. I could take pages talking about all of what is in here, but instead let me just say that it is everything a troop needs!

So, if you are a part of a Boy Scout troop that does not have a Woods Wisdom book, do whatever it takes to get them one. It is a resource that will help the troop for many years to come. My Scouts and I highly recommend this book!

If anyone in landscape architecture, environmental design, and related fields is anticipating a plan "A" thesis or pursuing a PhD, this book is the best place to start and is a "must read" for all academic landscape architects around the globe, especially for academics attempting to compete in the research world with a masters degree and illustrates through example and presenting the vast arena of knowledge building, how the Ph.D. is becoming the necessary standard to conduct rigorous knowledge building with in the profession. This book has been needed by scholarly investigators in these subject areas for over 30 years. Before the publication of this book, one of the best discussions on the subject was a "Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture" annual meeting proceedings from 1980 by the University of Wisconsin addressing landscape research or general books such as Paul D. Leedy's "Practical Research." For landscape architectural researchers, it has been difficult to find publications addressing research methods that span the profession, because the profession addresses the built environment as architects and engineers do, the natural environment found in natural science investigations, human behavior in the social sciences, and additional studies related to cultural geography, history, and fine arts. Each page is filled with nuances, approaches, and ideas that should not be taken lightly and each page often embraces ideas found in a whole college lecture expanding upon theory, methods, and research seminar dialogues. The book starts with the basics about building and creating knowledge, then describes the various strategies and approaches to build knowledge, and finishes by relating knowledge to professional practice. The book also provides many case studies to illustrate key ideas and for the reader to explore further. The book is also international in perspective, drawing from case studies by investigators around the world, including a case study by myself and my colleagues found on page 144. I do know both of the authors of the book and admire their professionalism, dedication, and productivity. So I probably have a personal bias in favor of this publication. After carefully examining the publication, I hope that you will also have a favorable opinion and find the book as useful as I have found it. I personally own over 5,000 textbooks and this specific book has quickly risen to one of my favorites and most meaningful. I am sure that it will become featured in-depth required reading by the planning, design, and construction graduate students at my university in the research methods, design theory, and research seminar courses. The book provides a great foundation so that when students enroll in the regression modeling, multivariate analysis, non-parametric statistics, or spatial autocorrelation classes, they have a perspective concerning where and how the statistics course fit into landscape architectural knowledge building.

Excellent book

I've used this book as a text in my graduate landscape architecture course for two years and consider it to be the very best book ever written on landscape architecture research. My students find it very valuable in framing their research questions and identifying appropriate ways to investigate them. The chapters cover each of the topics and issues related to research in landscape architecture in an even-handed and easily-understood way. The authors don't shy away from contentious issues and provide very appropriate and precisely correct interpretations. I recommend this book to you without reservation.
