Adult/High School–McCullough concentrates on George Washington's role in the creation of the Continental Army, starting with his appointment in 1775 to lead the rather amorphous army of the united colonies and continuing through his successes with that army at Trenton and Princeton as 1776 turned into 1777. He introduces readers to the 1776 that Washington experienced: one of continual struggle both to create a working army and to defeat the British. The victories that he met outside Boston were soon followed by defeat and near ruin around New York and gave rise to the realization that 1776 might easily have become the worst year in the history of America. Not for the faint of heart

McCullough weaves together historical data and excerpts from letters and journals to create a narrative of this crucial year in American history. Beware that it is not for the faint of heart. This is not the glossed over history you learned in school. To be sure, it includes many proud and heroic moments, but it also shows Washington and his extremely ragtag army as human beings with all the faults and frailities. In this book we get not just the triumphs, but also the mistakes. This is not a case of trying to make anyone look bad, but it's probably a more unbiased view that most of us were raised with. You might want to be sitting down when you read this next bit ... Washington was not a god. He was hampered in this first year by a lack of officers with any real experience (seriously, one of his best and brightest, Nathanael Greene, was a very young, former bookseller with NO previous military experience), and little practical backing by the Continental Congress. But even so this account includes some painful mistakes. Still, the victories were very sweet, and those moments when the rebels rose to the occasion are glorious.

A more-than-compelling history lesson

As a proud American who, I'm ashamed to admit, knew next to nothing about the details of the Revolutionary War, McCullough's "1776" was a much-needed history lesson for me. Written lucidly and grippingly throughout, "1776" provides a strong foundation for one's study of this most critical period of our nation's history, and has inspired me to continue my own studies by reading as much as I can about the revolution and its meaning, both then and now. One also comes away with a sense of awe toward General (and later President) George Washington. The extensive bibliography that McCullough has provided is more than enough for a lifetime of study.

I think that those Americans who read this book will, like me, feel more strongly patriotic and value more greatly the selflessness of those who fought for our country in its infancy. And I think that non-Americans who read it will better understand what it means to be an American, and hopefully see our country in a more favorable light. Yes, I realize that America has its problems, both currently and historically, and that we're certainly not beloved by everyone throughout the world, but it's nonetheless moving to at least try and perceive what we mean when we talk about the "American spirit": that feeling of unbounded liberty that allows us to truly pursue happiness. "1776" offers a path.

Would like to contact David McCullough - In chapter 1 he details how the House of Lords and the House of Commons both did not want to support King George and his proposed attack on America. The reason that they did not support it could have been Masonic. Prior to the Revolution the Masonic Ritual contained a "MISSION". Since King George was not Masonic, those who understood could not have uttered a word of the ritual to explain their vote. This "MISSION" was deleted in 1832 from the Masonic Ritual because it was complete. No Mason would have even known about who learned the ritual after 1832. Learned about it due to the member of my lodge having ancestors of who were members after the Lodge was built in 1814 and knew of this as part of the lodge history learned from those members who went who were made members prior to 1832. This change could have been part of the reason that the anti-masonic riots erupted in 1832.
The published history of the Pennsylvania Grand Lodge demonstrate how very unexplained events and meeting took place in thru 1778 in Philadelphia. This also correlates with the Grand Lodge of England removing the Grand Master who had to be a Stewart, and replacing him with one from the Hanover linage. This is an 1832 event.

they say that knowledge is power however many of folks have taken their knowledge to the grave with them and not applied it, Kevin shares kingdom principles and action steps you can take to easily implement them into your life and apply them and this is where the real power comes from. This book is a must read for anyone who is dead serious about changing ALL circumstances in their lives - a how to book for those desiring more than enough, I am so grateful that Kevin has taken the time to share the principles with all people that have radically altered his and so many other peoples lives! As a good book says there is nothing new under the sun - and Kevin will take you straight to the truth in this book and allow you to discern distractions from truth so you can apply these principles into any area of your life that you wish so you to can transform yours!!! Not just another prosperity teaching ...

I've heard many teachings on living the abundant life and own many books on the subject. Kevin Mullens brings a real straight forward candor to the subject that will change many lives . It was refreshing, informative, and put things into a great biblical perspective. In a society where money corrupts many who start out honest, I am thankful to know a true man of God who has a heart for people and lives by the principles of the word he preaches. He is also an upright man of business and leads teams with integrity. I have worked with Kevin in the business world and watched him make right decisions in tough times. He's a leader and he leads by example. I highly recommend this book for anyone who desires to move out of mediocrity and into their destiny.

Great resource! Exactly what I needed.

I wanted to give this book 6 stars, but of course, Amazon won't let me do that. I bought this book in its original pdf format from the author's web site for $39.99. I was struggling with the decision of how much charge for my consulting services, and this book was exactly what I was looking for. More than that, it was exactly what I *needed* as I was starting my new consulting business. I was so impressed with it, that I contacted the author and suggested she make it available for Kindle. One week later, here it is, in an affordable abridged version.

If you are a consultant who is just starting out or wonder if you are undercharging, I can't recommend this book enough. I've never written a review on Amazon before, but this book really deserves all of the kudos I'm about to give it.

Simply put, buying this book probably was the best decision that I've made so far for my new consulting business. As the author points out, setting your consulting fee might be the most important strategic business decision you make. The pitfalls of setting fees that are too high seem obvious. However, as the author explains, setting your fee too low can also have all sorts of unintended negative consequences. Setting fees "just right" is very tricky, and the author does a fantastic job of leading you through the process of figuring out how to do that.

The book is extremely well-written and an easy read. It feels more like a conversation or consultation than a book in some respects. She avoids jargon, and provides a great balance of explanation, anecdote, and examples from consultants who have also struggled with the issue of setting fees.

It is also very thorough and methodical, with just the right amount of detail to make it useful to a business owner. You neither have to weed through the unnecessary to get critical information, nor are you left with unanswered questions.

The major exception to that last point is if you are interested in solution-based fees, in which case, you will want to definitely upgrade from the abridged version. (Note: If you want the full version after you read the abridged version, the author is offering a way to upgrade without having to pay twice.)

I've done some consulting, and fees definitely are always the biggest hurdle. This is especially the case when you have a good relationship/long-term relationship with a client. This is a must-have book on my shelf. Lost one star for formatting (i.e. blank pages, awkward page breaks, etc.) and some redundancy of ideas. The book is definitely worth the $40 price-tag nonetheless. As another English BA with an MBA, I've found this mix to be very successful personally and professionally. Some of my bosses are the same, and I think that is part of what gives this book its strength. I've found a lot of business writing to be especially weak when the person doesn't have a strong writing base. I think Andrea knows how to distill the complex ideas and make them simple.

What a help!

I'm not much of a writer, but I can tell you how much this book has helped me decide on setting my fees.
I had already purchased the full version, which is great; when I saw that it was now available here and felt others would benefit as much as I did. By following the clear, logical steps outlined in the book I was able to answer the first question of self-employment: knowing how much to charge.

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss, and quit her job. Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again). So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a Naughty and Nice Romance Author. Her books include the following: The Edge Series (Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing Fire); The Guardians of Vesturon Series (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent, and Beginnings); The Tragic Series (Tragically Flawed and Tragic Desires); The Hart Brothers Novels (Freeing Her, Freeing Him, Kestrel, and The Fall and Rise of Kade Hart); The Praestani Novels (Dark Waltz and Death Waltz), Exquisite Betrayal and Dirty Nights. Other than loving writing about romance, she loves chocolate, ice cream, and coffee and swears they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

Weird

This was just a strange book to me. I wish that it had gone one way or another. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it. It was a little soft at times but I thoroughly enjoyed, what I deem, an accurate drug addiction/recovery. I liked the growth Jules went through. Loved the meek little girl to bad a$$ potty mouth in the end. And I loved Kade.

But, like i said. I wish the genre went one way or another. I love contemporary romance and pnr but it didn't mesh well (for me) in this book and I have way more questions that have not been answered.

I will probably read Sabin's book. He's my favorite type of character..broody and alpha. I'm really hoping for a part 2 or answers in Sabin's story.

Even given the little disappointment I felt with unanswered questions and the cross genre I am not sorry I read it.

Bait and Switch

Disappointed. I like the first 2; expected Kade to have his own story. Kade was front and center; heroine not so much. Did not like that she used it to introduce a new paranormal series. That is not what I wanted from this book. There are 2 distinct endings from which to choose. I read both. Please note, if you want the entire contemporary ending; there is a chapter after the alternate ending. I just ordered after reading the first 2 on my Kindle; did not read reviews.

What A Wild Ride!!

Well, the Hart Brothers books end. Boo! I'm still sad I didn't read the first two books about Kolston's life, but like I said in the Kestrel book review...you get all of his story recapped. So I find it pointless.

Soooo, first off this book was a great read! Very different than Kestrel and I'm assuming Kolston's stories. Kade is less Alpha than his brothers, but I did not take that as weakness. He's every bit a protector and sexy beast with a dirty mouth. Juliette was a great h! She goes through an unbelievable tragedy in the very beginning of this book, and goes from shy and scared of her own shadow (literally.. Wink wink) to becoming a fully grown up, opinionated, kick ass woman!! Sexy times we're awesome! They both have a somewhat inexperienced sexual past and when the first few sexy encounters they have are sort of fumbled and all over the place, I found endearing!! Not EVERYONE is a professional sex machine straight out the door, but most authors seem to have that idea... Whatever....

So the last part of the book is like..no, not like.. IS a "Pick Your Adventure". Remember those from elementary school? Anywho- the author left a pretty adamant note not to divulge any info. Overall, the book was a solid 4.5 star book. The last 15% of the book is where it gets a little WTF, but I liked it! Overall I really enjoyed this book. There is going to be a spin off coming off the heels of this last book and I will be looking forward to reading more of AM Hargrove in the future!!
