About the Author

    In addition to being a licensed pharmacist and management consultant, Anthony Leong has been a part-time film critic since 1997. Many of his 750+ film reviews and articles have appeared in books, magazines, and entertainment portals all around the world, as well as on his own entertainment web site, MediaCircus.net. A good primer to recent Korean Cinema

I have been interested in Korean cinema ever since I worked in Korea as an ESL teacher. My first Korean DVD purchases were Shiri and JSA, which I brought more for novelty and and as a momento of Korea than anything else, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the production values of both these movies. As a result, I have become a firm fan of Korean movies, and have added a number of titles to my DVD collection. This book will help me select some more good titles to add to the collection.

"Korean Cinema" fulfills a useful niche as it is basically a primer for Korean movies from 1998 to 2002 for newcomers to Korean cinema. The author reviews and rates a number of the movies made in this time span, from "Attack the Gas Station" through to "2009: Lost Memories", plus a couple of titles a couple of years older. The author also rates and discusses 10 Korean movies from that time period which he rates as must sees. It would be a good start for building a DVD collection. There is also a section devoted to the major personalities of the Korean movie industry, actors and directors. It is illustrated but only in black and white, and many of the pictures are of poor quality.

Ignore the low rating reviews of this book - the reviewers obviously brought this book expecting a serious textbook of Korean cinema, which if you actually read the advertising blurb for the book, it is most certainly not. There are books out there discussing the full history of Korean cinema, but make no mistake, this book is not one of them. It is strictly for the newcomers to the genre, and who has little knowledge of the Korean movie industry. It does have a chapter on the history of the industry in Korea, but it is only superficial, and it isn't the reason I brought the book anyway.

Especially ignore the twit who is critical of the author basing his movie reviews on english subtitles. Korean is a particularly difficult language to learn and to become sufficiently competent in the language to be able to follow a Korean movie without english subtitles is beyond the abilities of all but the most dedicated of people. The author of "Korean Cinema" does make it quite clear he is only a recent convert, and thus a beginner, in Korean movies.

This book would lend itself to an update every 3 or 4 years or so. There has been some considerably significant Korean movie releases since this book was first published, not least of which is "Tae-Guk-Gi". I also recommend checking out the website [...] which has movie reviews, talent profiles and other useful informative articles. The author of the site, Darcy Paquet, is listed in the bibliography of "Korean Cinema" a number of times.

Very informative and worth while reading on Korean Cinema from the late 1990's to the early 2000's. Lots of reviews that will inspire you to seek out some excellent movies. Prime has a great selection of Korean films.

Lots of detail in the book, no backstory

I'm only partially into reading this book, but I feel that I have to comment. I've seen the movie, and even in the first few chapters the book offers a ton of extra details. Things that move quickly in the movie are explained in far greater detail, even if we hear little of what the characters think. So far I have no problem with the writing. What there is little to none of is backstory. I assume that this is a decision that was made at the top. It seems that the powers that be want the backstory to either be developed in future movies, or told in some of the books that will come out. Don't expect to have all of your questions answered, but do get this book if you want a fuller sense of what's happening in the movie. Since I haven't finished the book yet, I'll give it 4 stars for "so far so good with lots of potential."

OK - now I've read the whole book. Could the action have been written in a more exciting way? Possibly, but I found myself getting swept along with the action most of the time. I appreciated the extra scenes and feel that I understand the movie better. I wish that there was more backstory, but am hopeful that all will be revealed in good time (you hear that Disney/Lucasfilm?1?). I'm just happy to have Star Wars back on track!

Don't bother, spend your $13 to see the movie again.

It's...it's...it's just flat-out not well-written. The storyline is fine, because it's identical to the movie. You can tell where there were probably a couple of deleted scenes that got cut from the movie after the novelization was already written, but otherwise if you've seen the movie you've experienced the book. What had me almost unable to finish it though was the author's writing style. Creative writing 101 advice is to barely, if ever, use the present participle to lead into a sentence. The author does it _constantly_. Literally several times per paragraph. "Walking into the room, Rey saw BB-8. Beeping quickly, BB-8 rolled over." "Dashing across the hall, Finn avoided the blaster fire. Diving back, Han looked at Chewie." That kind of thing, repeated over. And over. And over. It slows the flow of the story way down and once you see it happening, you can't unsee it, and before long it's all you can focus on.

AFFECTIVE STORY ENHANCEMENT !!!

The movie was a long awaited continuation of a tale that has taken a literal lifetime to share! How we waited for its arrival! Due to family illness, we were unable to see it when it first came out but recently watched its Starz Premiere. It was worth the wait! However, there were so many areas, subjects, topics that either flew by too fast or gave scant or insufficient information. It took multiple viewings to grasp certain aspects of the story because they went by so quickly! Other places, the story left whole series of questions begging to be answered! We purchased the book in hopes of gaining answers to these questions and thus further insight into the story! The book did a fairly good job of recounting the story while adding in some additional and significant information. For example, Rey's foray into the basement of Maz's castle and her first encounter with Luke's lightsaber was definitely enhanced by the book's recounting. Just so with the explanation of what happened to Poe after the initial crash he and Finn experienced on Jakku. There are still many questions left to be answered but isn't that the way with the entire series? The book answers enough, expounds enough and enhances the story enough to be well worth the effort, time and money to read it!!! Also, it's considerably less expensive now than when it first came out! We
recommend reading the book and then revisiting the movie.......Enjoy!!!

Hailing from a working-class section of Los Angeles, the eldest daughter of divorced parents, Carlisle struggled early on with shame over her mother's depression and her step-father's drinking problem; teased for her chubbiness, she sought escape from a difficult home and found it in the mid-'70s' burgeoning L.A. punk scene. Steeped in the brash music of Iggy Pop and Queen, crazy about the iconoclastic new look, she and her friends haunted Hollywood clubs while she worked as a hairdresser and secretary. Couldn't put it down!

Belinda Carlisle's autobiography is one of the most fascinating books I have read in quite some time. I was riveted, shocked and disgusted as I read Carlisle's surprisingly open and honest confession about her life of self loathing and drug and alcohol abuse. I was aware of her debauchery during her days in the Go-Go's, but was completely unaware of her continued substance abuse and self inflicted mental torture during her solo career. I honestly could not put it down and read the entire 250+ pages in one day. If you were/are a Go-Go or Carlisle fan, this is not to be missed. Belinda was always and still is my favorite member of the Go-Go's and I thoroughly enjoyed following her heartbreaking journey from beginning to end. I am amazed and thankful she actually survived to tell the story of her rollecoaster ride of ups and downs she endured during her life and career. It's comforting to know Belinda has at long last found some sort of peace and come to terms with her turbulent and disturbing past.

I know that I should highlight how good the mystery plot of Catch Me If You Can was, I know I should tell you that Caesar Romano and Dan Green are a perfect detective couple and that they will become the next magnificent duo, but closing this novel what most remains with me is the fun I had reading it.

Caesar Romano is the son of a typical Italo-American family, typical since, doesn't matter if you are a saint or a sinner, if you are family you are loved; and Caesar, Ce for his friends, knows he is loved and that gives him an attitude to life more than positive. He knows he will succeed in his career, and today's target is to land the job as Assistant Direct to the most important art gallery owner of NYC, Mallory Albright. For that reason he has perfectly planned the exhibition opening at his current gallery, and since the subject are naked marble busts, what is better than having the waiters serving cocktails with the upper half of their uniform missing? Everything is perfect until the moment Ce's former boyfriend, and in the closet actor, Shep, crushes the party, Ce's current boss starts to behave in a strange way and a former police detective, Dan Green, develops a sudden interest in Ce and his whereabouts.

The morning after the party, one of the busts, that of Justin Timberlake, is missing the head, the clock that was at its wrist is found around Shep's private part, a paint from Albright's gallery is missing as well, and Ce and Dan have to resolve a mystery... the missing artworks? Well that too, but mostly they have to find a way to make their budding relationship works. True, they are on the right path, since Ce's family likes Dan, once they went over the fact he is/was a cop and apparently not all businesses of the Romano family is 100% legal, and you know that if you want to conquer and Italian lad, you have to pass through his family.

The novel is fast paced, so fast that you cannot really miss a word, otherwise you risk to not grasp the full concept of the sentence. Or maybe that was the result of Ce being a little incoherent, thoughts were swirling in his mind like confetti during carnival, and sometime I was still following one confetti from the sky to the ground, while Ce was already jumping on another wagon.

Emphasis on "study" guide

This item was literally meant to train you in how to take the actual test, instead of simply providing you with strategies and letting you loose on some practice exams. Each section was broken into several build-up practices to train your brain into thinking a certain way in order to make the actual tests easier to understand and respond to. I only wish there were more build-up practice exercises, really, as you can definitely see results in the way you approach each section after working the exercises. The book also includes brief overviews of strategies for each section and detailed descriptions of your instructions for each portion of the tests and whether or not a section is scored, as well as notes as to which sections of the test are safe to 'guess' on, and which will penalize you for wrong answers. Overall, and excellent guide, and I would recommend it in and instant.

First-Rate with a Small Quibble

I found Mark Alan Stewart's McGraw-Hill's Postal Exams 473/473C book a first-rate guide to preparing for the U.S. Postal Service's Exam 473. Stewart's book familiarizes you with the exam format and content, contains effective strategies for approaching each part of the exam and provides drills that build confidence and that also give you a sense of how to pace yourself. The book also provides seven practice exams that help you identify your weaknesses and strengths. Combined with what the Postal Service itself provides, reading Stewart's book and doing the drills and practice exams is well worth the money - and quite sufficient to prepare you to do well on the exam. I have one quibble, however. On the important memory section of the exam (Part C, Section 2), Stewart advises us to ignore things like Ave., Ct., etc. and to write down only the street names. That's useful but omits that sometimes you also have to remember what kind of street it is when coding addresses for delivery routes, not just the street's name. Remembering the street name is most important but sometimes the testers - and even Stewart's practice tests - will provide the same street name but a different kind of street (e.g., Ave., Blvd., Lp., etc) - and to code it correctly you have to remember the kind of street it is as well as the street's name. Other than that quibble this book is right on target.

I was disappointed to find out that many of the tips of this book were not usable, since the U.S. Postal Service now uses complete computer testing - and you are not allowed anything in the room where the testing is - no pencils, paper, nothing. Just the computer. So alot of the helpful hints about writing yourself hints for the memory portion were useless. I guess it would be a good idea before buying a book for a time-sensitive test like this is to see when it was published.

Very good book!

After reading this book, I have found it to be very good. Although this book may seem simplistic, it gets its point across. This book is not meant to be a dissertation on the spiritual growth of a Christian, but rather a quick help guide. Things don't have to be complex in order to make a point. Jesus even said his teachings could be understood by children before adults. If you have ever been in a theological library you would soon find out you are feeding your intellectual life and not your spiritual life. This book does not claim to be a future theological masterpiece to collect dust on a bookshelf somewhere, but rather, as a short and simple guide to help a person connect to God under the salvific blood of Christ. So if you want deep intellectual reading, find another book, but if you want a simple how-to guide to learn how to make your practical Christian life more spiritually pleasing, buy this book. By the way things look, you could pick up a used one for 35 cents or so, a small price to pay for easy Christian help.

For the Christian that is willing to see things for what they really are.

I love this book. This book shows different ways in which the enemy will attack the Christian. I used to think I was terrible because curse words and images of porn would pop into my head while praying. It is a direct attack from the enemy on a new Christians prayer life. I notice a lot of people are giving this book low ratings. Take that as a sign that this is the real deal. The enemy will only attack things that are a real threat to himself and the souls he is trying to devour. I would like to buy one for each member of my family. As for the people upset about the "attacks" on Catholicism, the bible says to "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.-1 Thessalonians 5:21. Ask the Pope what happened to the 2nd commandment which is listed in Exodus 20:4, 20:23, 34:17; Leviticus 19:4, 26:1; Dueteronomy 4:23, 5:8; 1 Corinthians 10:7,10:14 and 1 John 5:21.

Every Christian Needs This Book!

The Next Step for Growing Christians is a small easy-to-read book written to encourage newly saved Christians to grow in their walk with Jesus Christ. The book consists of eight chapters, with each chapter presenting a different lesson for the Christian. I've heard of different ministries offering their own material to newly saved Christians; however, in my opinion, this is the book you should buy. The Next Step is a valuable asset for any Christian looking to grow in their relationship with the Lord. I personally believe every Christian should buy this book. My only regret is not buying it sooner.
