Drawing on evidence from the European Union (with comparisons to other industrialized countries including the United States and Canada), the authors demonstrate that the effective retirement age is influenced by social security regulations (such as a change in eligibility age) and discuss ways of measuring these embedded incentives. Fenge and Pestieau examine the implicit taxes on prolonged working life from normative and political economy perspectives. They discuss optimal payroll tax rates that minimize distortions of labor supply and retirement decisions and consider alternative ways to finance benefits, including consumption and capital income taxation. They discuss why policies are designed to discourage employment among older workers and why reforms to counter this often meet resistance. They demonstrate, contrary to the belief of many European governments, that pushing older workers into retirement does not free jobs for young unemployed workers. They show that the gap between salaries and productivity is an incentive for employers to rid themselves of older workers and argue that governments should not support this behavior by compensating older workers for the difference between severance payments and salaries in early retirement programs.

Truly A Spectacular Work! This Is THE M1 Garand Book to Have...

Bruce Canfield's new book, "The M1 Garand Rifle" is simply amazing! I think this is the current title holder for the best gun book ever published. That's my initial assessment, based on several factors. Here are some of my observations in the few hours I have spent with the book so far:

¡ It's 872 pages long - A tome of Garand information with no comparison
¡ Photos are color throughout, wherever color photos were available
¡ It features profuse use of inset marking photos, which is a feature I love to see
¡ The book is in portrait format, which is easier to reference, yet it still presents the rifles and inset photos in a pleasing layout that is more often experienced in a landscape formatted book
¡ The detail is incredible
¡ Bruce must have thousands of hours in this book
¡ I like how accessories are featured throughout the book
¡ Photography is top notch
¡ This book will be very difficult to top, and I don't think anyone will attempt to do so - This is the authoritative reference on the subject that will be studied for decades to come

I am among 58 who are listed as contributing to the book, however I do not have any major connection to it, and this is all Bruce Canfield's work. My contribution was extremely minor, in that I reviewed the Field Manual and Technical Manual commentary, and provided a couple of pictures. Whenever a good firearm reference book like this is written, many collectors are consulted for photos and information. It's what helps the author to make it as comprehensive as it can be at the time it's written.

Bruce should be extremely proud of this book. Wow! It's really exceptionally great. I enthusiastically give it 5 stars for a rating. I will spend a lot of time with this one, and anyone with an interest in the M1 Garand should order one immediately, without hesitation. You will be very happy you did. Add it to your Christmas list, but make it an early present to yourself...

The most complete and thorough book on "the finest battle implement ever devised."

Bruce Canfield's books are invariably well-researched and complete. What is more important, he has the ability to make topic(s) that can be very dry & technical [ie: "b-o-r-i-i-i-n-g!"] into something engaging and worthwhile. If this book has a problem it is that it is a MIGHTY TOME, and it really should have been broken down into two volumes to make reading it less of a [physical] chore. Due to the book's large size & substantial composition [ie, it's a quality binding on premium grade paper stock], you pretty much HAVE to sit at a table to read it: it's just not a comfortable item to keep on the bedside table to peruse before lights-out. Ah, the price of success! ;-) I have several of Canfield's other books, and this one is truly his masterpiece. Worth every penny!

I love Johns writings

I love Johns writings, but i find his theology to be off. I believe Christ died for the world, John does not. He is a hyper-calvinist. Also, I do not believe in Lordship salvation. I believe Lordship is works theology. They will not admit to this, but I think it is. He has some weird teaching with respect to Holy Spirit as well.

I still listen to him, but filter out the calvinist stuff.

Adrian Shaughnessy co-founded the design studio Intro. In 2003 he left to pursue a career as an independent art director and writer. He has written, edited and designed numerous books including How to be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul. He writes for all the leading design magazines, and is a contributor to Design Observer, the world's most widely read design blog. He is editor of Varoom magazine and hosts a radio show called Graphic Design on the Radio. He is a frequent lecturer and has been interviewed on radio and TV.

Tony Brook is a highly respected graphic designer. He is creative director and founder of design company Spin, the innovative multidisciplinary London studio. Brook has won countless awards, and has designed numerous books and publications. He has designed, edited and published the successful Spin series of publications. Good content and bad design

The book content follows a linear path as most of the interviewed studios are asked simmilar questions so you can compare. Here is what I got from it, most studios:

- are small (75% of them have 1-10 people),
- suggest you get a good accountant (and project manager),
- don't want to get a loan,
- use macs,
- don't compromise their creative vision,
- don't do it for the money,
- have lot's of books, toys,
- are painted white,
- quote each other as their inspiration, or quote no one.

That being said, the layout of the book is suboptimal. The font in particular is very small (I am guessing 9pt), thin weight and sans serif. Part of it is light grey and it is a pain to read.
All photos are thumbnails and lack detail. On the other hand, the paper of both the cover and the inside is very nice.

Excellent content, but poor typography

The interviews in this book are excellent, but visually it is a chore to read. Poor typography choices, from the typeface to the grid to the complete lack of typographic color make what should be an enjoyable, fast and riveting read a tedious one. I still recommend the book for fans of the studios interviewed -- their thoughts are a great insight into their processes -- but am disappointed by the irony of a book about designers that lacks such fundamentals of design.

Some great advice and great design

I loved this book I found the information to be very useful and illuminating, it is true that some of the interviews lead to similar answers but thats always going to be the case with business all in the same market.

As for the design of the book, I loved it. I like the minimal design and the duotone images, it provides a pretty design without distracting from the text.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in design studios or those looking to start up.

Julia Stein was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Los Angeles. A graduate of the University of California at Irvine, she has taught college in Los Angeles for many years. She has published two prior books of poetry; 130 poems in magazines and journals; and articles and interviews on women's, multicultural, and working-class literature in the U.S.

A MUST Read...

In Every Day is An Act of Resistance, each poem is infused with the daily life of Tarlen, and vice versa. Tarlen was a poet who lived with her shields down, and, in the tradition of Blake and Whitman, breathed poetry as easily as air; her poems are full of vitality, and, decidedly non-magical, as one would expect from a working-class poet. However, there is a delicacy to her work, a sensitive strength, which takes Tarlen's poems out of the category of "working-class," which, along with her background, puts her in class by herself. Tarlen's poems evoke the beauty of a wrought-iron fence: strong, detailed, and, starkly exquisite.
