This year's Best American Magazine Writing features articles on politics, culture, sports, sex, race, celebrity, and more. Selections include Ta-Nehisi Coates's intensely debated "The Case For Reparations" (The Atlantic) and Monica Lewinsky's reflections on the public-humiliation complex and how the rules of the game have (and have not) changed (Vanity Fair). Amanda Hess recounts her chilling encounter with Internet sexual harassment (Pacific Standard) and John Jeremiah Sullivan shares his investigation into one of American music's greatest mysteries (New York Times Magazine).
The anthology also presents Rebecca Traister's acerbic musings on gender politics (The New Republic) and Jerry Saltz's fearless art criticism (New York). James Verini reconstructs an eccentric love affair against the slow deterioration of Afghanistan in the twentieth century (The Atavist); Roger Angell offers affecting yet humorous reflections on life at ninety-three (The New Yorker); Tiffany Stanley recounts her poignant experience caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's (National Journal); and Jonathan Van Meter takes an entertaining look at fashion's obsession with being a social-media somebody (Vogue). Brian Phillips describes his surreal adventures in the world of Japanese ritual and culture (Grantland), and Emily Yoffe reveals the unforeseen casualties in the effort to address the college rape crisis (Slate). The collection concludes with a work of fiction by Donald Antrim, exploring the geography of loss. (The New Yorker).

Challenging and Provocative Reading
By takingadayoff
The Best American Magazine Writing collects the winners and finalists selected by the American Society of Magazine editors. The awards are for the best magazine writing, which includes journalism, essays, and fiction.
This year's collection is heavily weighted toward the serious side. The first piece in the volume is Ta-Nehisi Coate's convincing argument for why the United States should pay African Americans reparations, and start by adopting Representative John Conyers' House Resolution to hold hearings on the subject. Then there's Amanda Hess's story on how women are treated on the internet and Emily Yoffe's piece on how difficult it is for a man to defend himself against a charge of rape in universities. Another article tells us what it's like to be a gay man in Putin's Russia.
There are a few breaks from the serious in the volume -- I loved the piece by John Jeremiah Sullivan about two blues performers who recorded some remarkable songs in 1930. No one knew who they were, but then it turned out that one man did. Sullivan's quest to get to the bottom of this musical mystery is not only an interesting investigation, but it brings up some questions about what happens when the one person who can reveal the fascinating story can't or won't publish his findings.
I also found the essay by Monica Lewinsky thoughtful and disturbing.
And finally, the essay by Roger Angell on aging is downright life affirming.

An annual treat
By Eleanor
This is the third of these anthologies I have read and the experience is always enjoyable and stimulating. Each anthology contains a mixture of reportage, comment, criticism, and essay, ending with a short story. You may not agree with all the viewpoints but the writing is excellent and you will end up learning new things.
The 2015 edition includes essays on the misreporting of Chicago's crime statistics, the provision of dementia care, the Internet and feminism, the unjust treatment of some of those accused of rape on college campuses, and a short story by Donald Antrim, whose work I will be seeking out again. Highlights for me included a dreamlike essay by Brian Phillips on sumo wrestling and Yukio Mishima, Jerry Saltz's acerbic art criticism, Roger Angell's account of life at the age of 93, and an intelligent, articulate and very moving article by Monica Lewinsky on her public shaming.

I am pretty sure that these essays were not the best
By LikaD
Entertaining to a degree. I am pretty sure that these essays were not the best. I definitely read magazine articles which were much better than these. I would not call this book "the best american magazine writing," but " trendy magazine writing." The second article was probably the worst- the author sounded too immature. Would not recommend this book to anybody who is looking for the best american magazine writing. If you looking for the best writing read Harpers and The Atlantic.
