This is a dense and closely argued study of the intellectual background of "art nouveau," a term that underwent a total change in meaning between the Paris expositions of 1889 and 1900. Silverman traces the roots of the new style by examining rococo revivalism and the renewed interest in the 18th century, also considering the complex world of hu-man psychology first explored by Freud's teacher Charcot in explicating the shift from a new art of heroic iron and glass in 1889 to an art focused on the domestic and intellectual in less than a decade. Still Useful, but...

As the title and price suggest, this is a reference grammar of English, not a textbook. It's written for people who already have a grasp of basic grammatical principles. This is the sort of book that you pick up when you want to look up patterns of verb complementation, etc. Only a masochist would try to read it straight through, or to learn grammar from it.
The _Comprehensive Grammar_ is an expanded and revised version of a series of grammars first published in 1972 (starting with _A Grammar of Contemporary English_.) Since its publication, this book has been *the* standard reference work used by professional grammarians. It is a scholarly, descriptive account of English based on extensive analysis of real usage. It is particularly strong in the way that it stresses the communicative functions of English. It tries to present material without being bound to a specific theoretical position. In many ways, this was a wise idea, since it has allowed the book to remain useful over the years while syntactic theories have changed drastically.
If you come to this book from traditional, schoolbook grammars, this work will seem quite modern, especially in its treatment of tense and with some word categories like determiners.
On the other hand, since the basic framework for this book was laid down in the 1960s, it does not reflect much of the research that has occurred since.
I have used this book for years now, and until recently, I would have recommended it without reservation as the best reference grammar available and given it five stars, despite the fact that it was beginning to get a bit long in the tooth. In 2002, however, Huddleston and Pullum brought out their _Cambridge Grammar of the English Language_, which is destined to supplant Quirk, et al. as the standard reference.
Huddleston and Pullum challenge the analysis of the _Comprehensive Grammar_ in many places, and (from the parts that I've read, at least) they make a compelling case.
The _Comprehensive Grammar_ remains very useful if you need to see examples of various structures, and to provide a complementary view to Huddleston and Pullum. But since most people can't afford two books of this size, I would go with the newer one, and go to the library if you need to check something in Quirk.

A remarkable intensive course on mechanics

Since there are some very good textbooks around in Mechanics, see, for instance, Kibble & Berkshire [1] or Scheck [2], I usually don't look too carefully into new textbooks on mechanics. However, the "Intensive Course" of Masud Chaichian and his colleagues Ioan Merches and Anca Tureanu is something particular.

Considering how skillfully the material is presented and how many useful exercises are provided, it is clear that this course is based on a broad teaching experience of the three authors. The traditional material on Newtonian and analytical mechanics is presented in a refreshingly direct way with explanatory examples and some nice historical material not taught conventionally. The Lagrangian formalism for discrete systems touches also the analogy between mechanical and electrical systems, the rigid body dynamics contains a very instructive discussion of gyroscopes and on the Larmor theorem.

The Hamiltonian formalism is worked out in quite some detail, including, for instance, a nice discussion of the Poisson and the Lagrange brackets and the relation to the corresponding commutators. Here the terrain is prepared in a rather direct and instructive way for applications to quantum mechanics.

In the concluding chapter, on about hundred pages, a course on the mechanics of continuous media is provided, a field that is becoming increasingly more important also in the development of modern physics and astrophysics. The three authors recognized this development an gave their students a rather complete introduction into this field. I wished I had learned as a student mechanics following this book. It has the great merit that also continuum mechanics is treated, including the Navier-Stokes equation. I only regret the absence of of a discussion on asymmetric stress tensors.

In some addenda, the three authors even give their students some hints into post-classical applications of mechanics. Moreover, on overview over tensor algebra and analysis is provided.

A really "Intensive Course" on Mechanics that I can strongly recommend to undergraduate and graduate students of physics and relating subjects and to their corresponding teachers.

Good Photos, No Captions

I bought this book because I'm a fan of Terry Richardson's work more than of Gaga's, and the book is really affordable. Maybe if i knew more about Lady Gaga and followed her tour schedule I'd understand what was going on in the photos, know where they were taken, recognize the people with her. Since I don't, the lack of captions in this book is a major frustration. Are those her parents in some photos? Why is she crying? Is the blood smearing her body prop blood, or did she have an accident on stage? If you're a big fan you're probably sneering right now, but I'm a curious guy and really want to know. I love Terry's online diary, where the photos have simple captions to fill me in on his enviable life. On the plus side, I now know that Gaga has a great butt, and that she looks much better, younger, more vulnerable without the wigs and make-up. In my opinion those photos are the best, where you can see she's just an ordinary young girl, and I would have replaced the cover photo with the one of her lying in bed partially covered by messy sheets, her arm up over her head, looking right at the camera, almost like a young Marilyn. Sure would like to see that photo at full size... Photos like that really bring out a side of Gaga we never see, and that's where Terry's genius really lies.

More For Fun Than For Photography Skills.

I am a enormous Gaga fan and I was really looking forward to this book. I still like it very much, but I was a little disappointed. I love the fact that the pictures are totally random, but I did expect them to be professionally taken by Terry Richardson. I must compliment Terry for capturing Gaga raw in her everyday life although at most 10% of the pictures look like they where thought out (like the one where Gaga is eating pasta, or the one where she is looking down the balcony with a cigarette, and the one with her hand sticking out of the water, or even the few black-and-white close-ups of her face) while the rest have people and hands in the way, or Gaga is just brushing her teeth, which makes it more relatable and is fun to page through, but there was no point in getting a professional photographer to do this job. It also makes me wonder who is taking the pictures when half of them include Terry Richardson...

On the other hand, all the pictures are very good quality, and totally exclusive to the book. The quality of the book and binding is very high too. As I said in my title, nobody is going to study or look closely at any of these pictures, since most of them could be taken by me or you or any random homeless guy as long as he knows how to use a camera. I still recommend this book to Gaga fans, but not if you want to see well taken pictures. If you are tight for money, I suggest you get Born This Way - The Collection [2 CD / DVD Combo] instead, because it is much more enjoyable and practical, since this book weighs a ton

If Amazon would allow it, I would give it 3.5/5, but 3/5 it is :)

Great value for pop merchandise

I am a big Lady Gaga fan so buying this book was not a question to me. Half-hearted or casual fans might not care so much. But here's my two cents.

The book itself is a huge hardback, almost textbook size. There are at least a couple hundred pages of full-page color and black/white photographs. All of it is unique photography and not reiterated promographs.

It contains various stages of drunk and nakedness, meaning it might not be the best coffee table book for when your in laws visit. Some photos are split onto two pages when they really should not be (because the cut off point is really odd and not intuitive). Some pages are left blank randomly, but not a large number of them. None of the photos have captions, so unless you know your Gaga you will not know when anything was taken, who is in the photos (besides Gaga which is obvious), or any fashion credits.

So it is not the perfect photo book, but for a gaga fan I'd consider it a must-have.

A good place to start working on security fundamentals.

With the need for network security ever increasing daily and the need for security specialist on the rise in the industry, it is nice to see Sybex releasing an update to this manual. While I found this book to more for the foundational concepts rather than the more experienced technician, this is still a great book to work with.

What attracted me to this book was the author Chris Brenton, of whom I read his Mastering Cisco Routers and found it an invaluable resource to my job. I also found his knowledge of this subject matter to be just as impressive, making this a first rate resource. I wished I had read this before the router book and certain concepts would have been easier to understand.

The chapters for firewalls and particular PIX Firewalls, I thought was well documented and explained. The one thing I found most impressive by the text was the fact that the authors made or make no assumption of knowledge level, thereby ensuring the reader have an explanation that will make sense and be comprehendible at the same time.

Another thing I found was that while this book is Network Security and does not conform to any Security Certification objectives, it would be useful for Security+ exam as well as some others. I also liked the exercises included, but I always want more, which is something to add to the next edition.

Overall for those trying to crack the security barrier you have a great place to get started. The authors did a terrific job and Sybex has a winner in this book.

I ordered the books I needed for school and I was not only please with the books, I was very pleased with how fast I got them in the middle of a snow storm... I will definately purchase books again. This book came with my Network Lab book when I ordered.

Good intro to network security

This was a required text book for a network security class. I found the book easy to read and straight forward. Mastering in the title is a bit misleading... this is more of an intro to network security, but it is exactly what I needed.
