Bad history backing a bad argument, and a bad read.

This is not a history text, it is a boring recitation of disparate historical events that reads like a junior high school essay, and a bad one at that. The author's thesis in regards to the centrality of the Indian Ocean to world history is not only never proven, there is no attempt to prove it. Instead the author constantly mentions events such as the Viking period in Scandinavia and states they were due to the Indian Ocean: no evidence is advanced, no argument is made, merely wide ranging claims of dubious providence. Through all of this I kept reading, but I put the book down when it got to the 19th century, which I know somewhat, and I realised that the basic research was as dubious as the argument. Basic facts you could have gotten from any encyclopaedia are wrong, which makes his fatuous claims even more nonsensical. An all round poor text that went into the bin rather than back on my bookshelf.

Find a Different Authority on the Indian Ocean, Please!

After reading many other books about the Indian Ocean, I was expecting a concise, if a bit brief summary of the main events in this ocean's history. After all, that's the title suggests. However, this book is a load of codswallop. The thesis is basically saying that Indian Ocean region has consistently been dominated throughout world history, something that is completely untrue. Just read Chaudhuri or Pearson--they provide perfect cases to back up my statement. Beyond, Kearney just doesn't get history right, making broad assumptions and generalizations that are worrying in their implications. The writer is a history professor, true, but one that specializes in U.S.-Mexican border relations, not the Indian Ocean or even any area of Asia. Beyond that, there is little to no evidence provided for the entire book--no footnotes or bibliography, just a suggested reading list at the end of each chapter.

Comparisons are odious but...

I don't know if we're allowed to compare books, but this is the book "Guns, Germs & Steel" should have been. It makes sense. The thesis that world history is the story of controlling trade in the Indian Ocean works beautifully. It's fairly short, but engaging and clearly written, with fun details and examples. Yes, it's got a desperately uninspiring cover and the publisher didn't promote it at all. This means a lot of people are missing out. How is anyone to know that this author knows what he's talking about and the world will never look the same again to the reader? Kearney's got all his ducks floating in an Indian Ocean row -- a body of water not even listed in the Index of "Germs & Steels"!

I am a board certified adult psychiatrist practicing in Hawaii for over the past ten years. In addition, I have walking with my lord Jesus Christ for over 14 years although baptized at a much earlier age. I feel that Pastor Ralph has written a book about anxiety that is exceptionally practical in its approach. If only a couple ideas work for you, your anxiety could be much improved. There is a lot of confusion and sometimes controversy in terms of reconciling our Christian walks and taking medication for emotional issues. Pastor Ralph writes exceptionally well on this hot topic in his usual self-disclosing, humble style. We are foreignors and outsiders until we go home to be with the Lord, so there should be anxious and worrisome moments along the way. And yet, we were promised life abundantly, so why not do everything possible to expel any overwhelming anxiety? This book can be part of that healing process for you.

Excellent Book Written From Compelling Personal Experience

This is an easy to read book with lots of practical tools, as the author discusses his very personal experience with anxiety and how he came to realize that it was ok to use medication as a tool while in the midst of this (or any other) illness. It's an honest account of a difficult struggle and I appreciate the transparent spirit and courage he shows by choosing to share this with others so we all may benefit from it. Many chapters are healthy practices even if you are not dealing with anxiety, like "Driving in the Slow Lane", "Multi-tasking Makes Us Crazy" and "Protect Your Sleep". I like that a Pastor is telling us to slow down to gain insight and clarity when so many of us struggle with juggling ever increasing demands for our time. I really got a lot out of this book.

Defeating Anxiety is one of the best books I have read regarding the recognition and treatment of anxiety disorders, particularly among Christians. Pastor Ralph makes no bones about getting sufficient treatment. Thank you for not only an excellent read, but also a very informative, freeing resource for those who suffer (mostly in silence) for their frightening disorders.
