Fabulous Guide to Understanding Hypnosis
By Nelle Pingree
As a hypnotherapist practicing in the U.S., this book is one of the best I've seen for explaining to the lay person the benefits of hypnosis, particularly as an adjunct to traditonal medical treatment. I'd love to chat with the author. Excellent job.

A Fine Read for Residents of BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA!!!
By Free Speech
Worth reading, particularly if you are a resident of BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA!

Let's see...

Hypnosis comes to U.S. in 1830s from central Europe (Germany), where it is known as "mesmerism" or "animal magnetism".

Victorian "Mesmerism Parties" raise the specter of prophetic abilities being evidenced in the course of these events.

U.S. initiates a series of truly bizarre 20th century programs via CIA, domestically classified as "MKULTRA" or precursor and successor programs. Hypnotism is one factor of research at hundreds of facilities in the U.S. and Canada, including a prison in Louisville, Kentucky, where drug experiments are carried out in a special wing paid for using "MKULTRA" cash. (See Congressional investigation.) LSD is a drug of interest. All such experiments on unwitting personnel are presented under heading of "we just have to do this in order to learn how to interrogate the evil communists". Matter of winning (or effectively controlling) the "hearts and minds of Americans" is never raised. Widespread involvement of medical doctors in MKULTRA activity has substantially faded from the public consciousness by the end of the 20th century within the U.S. (Similarity to German doctors involvement in Germany's WW II regime seems to be all but ignored over the long term. CIA suffers little or no credibility gap over the long term, with Congress often treating MKULTRA more as a budgetary concern before the cameras in Congressional hearings.)

Supreme Court repeatedly hears case of soldier unwittingly exposed to LSD experiments in Army, who claims harm to his family due to impact upon him, and finds that he has no right to sue the U.S. government, due to his position in the military.

The U.S. fights a series of protracted wars in the 20th century. Psychological indoctrination/experimentation, particularly on military officers in intelligence groups within one of the major branches acquires attention, as documented in "The Future of the Human Mind" by Estabrookes, who purportedly came to be known as an MKULTRA contractor, while also in charge of the department of psychiatry at Colgate University.

Spread of "mind games for fun and profit" seems to be reflected in "bullying" campaign in the news at end of 20th century.

Rise of "crazy men with guns" in the streets seems to correlate disturbingly with dawn of 21st century and corporate decisions to outsource production with downsizing, potentially reflecting workplace implosions and related psychologically based attempts within existing groups to retain employment via workplace threats and/or harassment or to exclude others from favored ("highly compensated") employment. The impact has potential to encourage submission to "indoctrination" and/or violence at the same time. Difficulties arise in determining origin of attacks in a specific group in terms of potential impact of mental illness that might be produced via a sense of "superiority" or, alternately, "exclusion and violation of rights beyond testable limits of the law".

Laws are passed in some states restricting the practice of hypnosis. (Opponents seek to allege that such legislation provides unnecessary protection. Supporters argue that if that is so, there should be no harm in keeping the laws.)

A really good summary of hypnosis
By Samuel-Louis Bandy, Jr.
Hypnosis is often thought of in connection with stage shows where someone dangles a watch and makes an audience member bark like a dog. If that is what you want out of hypnosis, then this is NOT the book for you.
The authors take the reader from the beginning in how this often-misunderstood facet of the human mind works, and continue building information in small units that are easy to read and concise. They detail the steps and pitfalls, as well as the potential uses of hypnosis. The book is written in a manner so that one does not need an advanced knowledge of behavioral sciences to understand it. The photographs and illustrations are clear and relevant.
After reading this book, I was much more aware of how Mesmer and Freud were able to utilize hypnosis to deal with their patients, but I was also even more aware of how the media and pop culture have held hypnonis in a category of mystery instead of seeing it as a true medical tool for therapy.
The authors simply deal with various topics, such as who can be hypnotized, how it is done, and how hypnosis can be abused. There is also some discussion of ethics and a good resource section for persons who wish to continue further with their research.
