It's all here

Andrew Atkinson shows his academic chops throughout the all too brief Android Mandroid. He references a slew of authors I personally appreciate (and have also reviewed in these pages - e.g. Jaron Lanier, Evgeny Morozov, David Siegel - on this same subject). As I read deeper, I kept waiting for the payoff, but Atkinson does not take a position. This is not a position paper, a polemic or even a rant. It is a framework for a much deeper work, we can only hope will come later.
The yin and the yang of it all is that while smartphones provide us with unparalleled tools to make our lives more effective, this comes at price. It keeps us from needing other people for anything at all, and keeps us fat and lazy. I think we all know this, but Android Mandroid is a fine overview of it, and there are tons of leads to explore further, if you are so inclined. One of great things about e-books is that the links work, for instant gratification. Atkinson himself proves to be well read and organized. But the result it a book that is as wide as it is flat, much like the Android solution he writes about.
Without any sense of irony, Atkinson uses roman numerals for his endnotes. This has the grating result of numbers that stretch across the page, such as xxxviii instead of a double digit 38. Is he longing for the good old days, or simply bridging the gap? That's the straddle of Android Mandroid.

A Brief, Informative Read. Highly Recommended.

Atkinson's Android Mandroid is a both timely and thoughtful exploration of the complex role that Android devices and software play in the lives of millions of users around the world. Seamlessly weaving together apposite illustrations and diverse sources from the worlds of computer science, popular culture, literature, philosophy, psychology, and world affairs, Atkinson argues that the function that this technology assumes is much more complex than the slick ad campaigns designed to market it would have us believe. While these tools, Atkinson claims, are morally neutral, they hold tremendous potential--quite unlike any previous form of technology--to amplify both community and anomie, rectitude and turpitude, and also to transform the very identity of the user. Android Mandroid will appeal to any Android user interested in a serious, but still pleasantly ludic, exploration of this transformative medium. The only question that remains is, on what device will you choose to read it?

I agree with the two reviews already posted - it was richly detailed but all too brief. Am looking forward to a more substantial treatment. Something new I had not seen before was Atkinson's discussion of the role played by smart devices in the Syrian conflict. Well done.
